Our guest show for January and February offers 31 artworks by 21 guest artists and is titled "Romantic Forms." It includes landscape, figurative work, portraiture, and abstract - all exciting and ecletic interpretations of the subject. Paul Mathenia, Art On Broadway Member Artist, To Have Work Featured at West Coast Art & Frame Convention

We are proud to share the news that Paul Mathenia, one of our member artists, had a new painting selected by Arthur A. Kaplan and Galaxy Group Publishing to be their feature piece at the West Coast Art & Frame Convention in Las Vegas. The convention opens on January 30 and Paul will be present for the unveiling.

The 30x30 acrylic on stretched canvas is titled, "Magnolia Elegance," and we hope to have it on display in our gallery at the conclusion of the convention. Congratulations Paul!

As 2011 draws to a close, we would like to thank everyone who came to our receptions and special events during the year, who purchased artwork from the gallery, who encouraged us with their kind words and expressions of support. We want to thank our spouses, partners, families and friends who know how much we love what we do and who help make it possible for us to do it. A big thank you as well to members of the media who help us spread the word of what's happening each month at Art On Broadway. We are blessed with many supporters and we appreciate each and every one of you. The gallery keeps getting better and our presence in the community is stronger and well respected.

We will start the new year with a member group show featuring work by all 20 of our talented artists. We invite the public to an Artists Reception on Saturday, January 7, from 6 to 9 p.m. Join us for a glass of wine and a lively discussion of what we do, and how and why we do it!

"Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree..."

Rockefeller Center and the White House might have some of the most celebrated Christmas trees each year, but Art On Broadway artists have created some of the most original. This is our second annual Holiday Tree Sculptures exhibit and once again we have trees that are festive and fun, elegant and sophisticated. The gallery's proceeds from the sale of these one-of-a-kind trees will be donated to the Community Transitional School in NE Portland, which educates children from homeless families.

The gallery will host a reception for this show on Saturday, December 3, from 6 to 9 p.m., and the exhibit will run through the 29th of the month.

In addition to the holiday trees and our usual display of outstanding original artwork, we have a special gift section this month with handmade items by our artists priced from $3-$20.

The reception for our Members Group Show on November 5 was very well attended and comments on the new exhibit were exciting to hear.

The second reception this month is to honor the PPASP artists show, "Artist to Artist," and will take place on Saturday, November 12, from 6 to 9 p.m. Our receptions are always free, with beverages and refreshments for our guests.

Visitors during November are encouraged to vote for their favorite PPASP painting. A People's Choice Award, in the form of a $50 gift certificate to Dick Blick, will be presented by the gallery to the guest artist whose painting receives the most votes. We hope you will join us and participate in the voting.

Please join us on Saturday, November 5, from 6 to 9 p.m. for a reception to celebrate our new exhibit of members' work at Art On Broadway. All of our artists will be featured this month so there is much to celebrate. Here's a sneak preview of work by some of our newest members.

Clarise Kinney joined us this summer and her specialty is painting portraits of animals. She is happy to do commissions of family pets and is wonderful at capturing the unique personality of each of her subjects.

If it's sculpture you're looking for, you'll love the fiber clay/raku works by Roberta Babcock. Roberta is a painter turned sculptor, and she incorporates her sense of humor and style into each and every piece she exhibits.

Finally, if you're a fan of Joni Mitchell's stone sculpture, be sure to visit soon. Joni and her husband are moving to Arizona in the very near future and we will no longer be able to display her sculpture once she moves. She will remain an Art On Broadway member, however, and will continue to exhibit her stone jewelry with us.

"Artist to Artist" Invitational

The member artists of Art On Broadway have invited member artists from Portland Plein Air & Studio Painters to enter a juried exhibit at our gallery for the month of November. The gallery will host a reception to honor the artists on Saturday, November 10, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Each PPASP artist had the opportunity to enter from one to three paintings; twenty artists accepted the challenge and will have their entries juried by the member artists from Art On Broadway. Most juried shows have one or two jurors selecting all the finalists. "Artist to Artist" offers a new selection process with each of our 18 member artists choosing only one painting to be in the show. Each of us has a personal opinion of art that's good or even great - and that excites us, moves us, inspires us, teaches us, lingers with us, or stimulates our senses. This show will reveal eighteen paintings that affected the members of Art On Broadway in such a way.

In addition, the public will have an opportunity to vote for their favorite entry among the finalists; at the show's close on November 26, the votes will be tallied and a People's Choice Award will be presented in the form of a Gift Certificate. Be sure to visit the gallery and vote for your favorite plein air painting.

It's Party Time at Art On Broadway

We have two celebration receptions during the week of October 2 at Art On Broadway, so the public will have twice the fun and two opportunities to visit with area artists personally.

Three of our member artists will be featured along with nine other westside artists who were juried into Portland Open Studios this year. The reception on Thursday, October 6, from 6 to 9 will help launch the tour of over 100 Portland area artists who open their studios and demonstrate their techniques during the second and third weekends in October. Kris Paul, Willy Paul, and Bruce Ulrich are all members of our gallery and are featured for this reception along with Marta Farris, Patti Issacs, Carli Schulz Kruse, Katherine Mean, Chris Mooney, Barbara Paanaker, Selene Rabinovitz,Deborah Shapiro,and Kitty Wallis. Portland Open Studio Tour Guides will be on sale during the reception.

Our second reception this week honors Myla Keller. Myla is an avid reader and world traveler and has been a member artist of Art On Broadway since spring of this year. She is showing works inspired by her travels and her passion for color and shape. Our reception for Myla takes place on Saturday, October 8, from 6 to 9 p.m. with complimentary wine and refreshments. The exhibit includes impressionist paintings in pastel and mixed media, and abstract studies in watercolor and mixed media. A fascinating mix from a fascinating woman!

I got to see part of Sue Jensen's collage demonstration last Saturday at Art On Broadway and was inspired to try more of this delightful art form on my own. Sue completed three small collages during the morning by applying beautifully colored hand-stamped and hand-painted papers to artist panels. She's getting ready for the Local 14 show at the World Forestry Center later this month.

When I got to Art Media yesterday, I couldn't help but notice the big transformation from AM to its new owner Dick Blick. No matter who owns it, an art supply store is certainly an inspiring place for an artist and with Sue's demo still on my mind, I headed for the handmade papers. I purchased about a dozen new sheets of lucious warm colored papers along with acrylic paints, brushes, and panel supports.

I also picked up the latest edition of "international artist" magazine which has a cover of a wonderful watercolor painting by Alvaro Casagnet, a world respected watercolorist from Uraguay. More of Alvaro's urban landscapes and interiors accompany the article about him. More info and imagery to inspire!

The above image is titled "The Bike Path," and was inspired by a Sunriver, Oregon location where Paul Mathenia returns each year. Paul is a seasoned painter who works easily in acrylic, watercolor, and oil, and has been an inspiring teacher to countless students over the years. He is paired with another artist whose skillful drawing ability is also evident in each and every painting. Steve Kekule's finely drawn images set moods and tell stories within the solid forms of his compositions. Both gentlemen have conquered the challenge of hand-eye coordination, and have gone beyond. Steve's painting titled, "Cables, Bolts and Brackets" is shown below.

Silent Auction - Encaustic Painting Demo - All at the Beaverton Old Town Festival

Art On Broadway is doing its part to attract folks throughout the day to the Beaverton Old Town Festival on Saturday, August 27. The parade and festival take place directly in front of our gallery.

Sue Jensen will give a free demonstration of the art of encaustic painting inside the gallery during the afternoon. Sue teaches private classes and just finished a workshop at Menucha earlier this month. Look for her finished acrylic, encaustic and collage paintings that are displayed throughout the gallery space.

In addition, we will host a Silent Auction of items created by our members and offered to the public at very reasonable starting prices. The auction will begin at 11 a.m. and bidding on the first round of items will close at noon. Each hour new artwork will be presented for the next hour of bidding, until the close of the auction at 5 p.m. This is your chance to buy art at a bargain!

We are excited about this special event and hope you'll decide to participate.

A Closing Reception for "A Focus On Black & White"

"Fire & Water" - Upcoming Show at Art On Broadway

Nikki Dilbeck and Sue Jensen will share the spotlight in July at Art On Broadway Gallery.

Bold, bright and energetic describes the expressionistic paintings of these two Portland artists. Nikki paints mainly with acrylics and creates highly textured abstracted landscapes and nonrepresentational paintings. She invites the viewer to step closer, to see beyond the face of the painting and into the elements and ideas waiting to be discovered in it. Sue works in acrylic, encaustic and collage, and creates works that suggest a subject without actually painting one. She feels her style requires her to focus her attention on strong composition. Both artists love color, which makes this duo's exhibit the perfect summer show!

A reception to honor Nikki and Sue will be held on Saturday, July 9, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The show runs through July 30 during regular gallery hours - Tuesdays through Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Jewelry Class Being Offered

Starting on Thursday, June 30, Art On Broadway will offer a Jewelry Sampler Class exploring three exciting techniques in a four-class session. Class hours vary by date but all are scheduled during the evenings. Students will learn Pearl Knotting, Copper Enameling, and Picot Weaving. The cost of the session is $165, which includes supplies - fresh water pearls; lamp, donut, and glass beads; closures; copper and glass fusing materials; and all necessary tools. Staffing Day at AOB

I usually staff at Art On Broadway each Thursday and Friday. Today I had my camera with me and I took some photos of certain pieces of work on display - sometimes the entire image and sometimes details of the work. Our showcase event for June is a solo show, featuring member artist Linda J. Baker. The gallery will host a reception to open this new exhibit on Saturday, June 4, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and we hope you'll join us in this free celebration of art. The show will continue through June 27.

Linda will share her classically styled still life and landscape oil paintings which are reminiscent of the old masters. Inspired by Oregon's bountiful harvest and stunning landscapes, Linda says her goal is to "convey what I see when I stop looking at the world in a casual and remote way and instead see things intensely and immediately." Linda prefers to paint from life whenever possible.

Breakfast In The Gallery Resumes

Today was our first Breakfast In The Gallery event for 2011. Chris Helton started us off with a wonderful pastel painting demo done on Wallis pastel paper. Chris first applied an underpainting of watercolor and worked from a series of photographs she had taken at Beaverton's City Park. Her composition focused on the city's newest art installation, with the playful fountain in the background and lounging figures in the foreground. Unfortunately, I left my camera at home so I have no image to post at this time. Along with Chris' delightful demo, guests were treated to complimentary coffee and continental breakfast fare.

Breakfast In The Gallery will take place once a month through October at Art On Broadway with Gretha Lindwood working in oil on June 18 and Paul Mathenia sharing watercolor techniques on July 16. Rae Campbell is scheduled to demo fused glass design on August 20 and Sue Jensen will offer her process for painting with collage on September 10. The demonstrations take place from 9 a.m. to noon. Since we're located just 3 short blocks from the Beaverton Farmers Market you can park once and enjoy both events. Or you can take the MAX train to the Beaverton Round stop and walk three blocks south to Broadway.

"Another's Perspective" - New Exhibit at Art On Broadway

Another interesting exhibit is coming up at Art On Broadway Gallery in Beaverton. Rae Campbell and Gretha Lindwood will be featured from May 7 through May 28 in an exhibit titled "Another's Perspective." An evening reception is planned for Saturday, May 7, from 6 to 9 p.m.; and, as always, the public is invited to attend.

The two artists shared original photographs and then interpreted the images in their chosen media, Rae with fused glass and Gretha with pastels on sandpaper or oil on canvas.

The May 7 reception will offer complimentary wine and refreshments and the opportunity to meet and visit with the gallery's member artists. We hope you will join us.

New Artists Join The Gallery

It's been a busy couple of months - starting in February, we replaced two openings created when Diane Ahrendt and Beth O'Mahony decided to move on to new beginnings. Willy and Kris Paul, husband and wife from Lake Oswego, accepted our offer to exhibit their art with us. Kris works in naked raku and Willy prints black and white photography on metal. We first saw Kris' ceramics in the 2010 Portland Open Studio show and she introduced us to Willy's work.

In March, we added Rae Campbell, a fused glass artist from Tigard, and Sue Jensen, a Portland painter who works in encaustic, acrylic and collage. Rae is already offering classes at the gallery on Sunday afternoons - each class is a separate lesson resulting in a finished product. Sue served as President of Local 14 in 2010 and brings her talents as an artist and an organizer - we felt so fortunate to have all four of these local talents choose to be a part of Art On Broadway.

Now in April, we have expanded even more. Nanette Davis, Myla Keller and Paul Mathenia of Beaverton, and Stephen Kekule of Cedar Hills are now a part of our group of eighteen. Several of our members knew Nanette from 2008 Portland Open Studios; she works in fiber - hand-dyed silks and papers - creating exquisite scarves, and unique baskets and wall hangings. Myla's exhibit of large abstract acrylics burst with color and use bold geometric shapes and strong emotional lines; Paul's representational acrylics depict traditional subject matter painted with great skill and confidence; and Stephen's meticulous "urban landscapes" are visual tales encouraging the viewer to become a part of the storytelling.

What a wonderful group of artists now make up our membership! Stop by and take some time to appreciate the diversity, skill, and visual artistry of this talented group. We're proud of Art On Broadway and we hope the Greater Portland community will feel the same way.

New Show on Broadway in Beaverton

We are so lucky to have a Broadway address - when it comes to announcing a new opening, we can refer to "on Broadway" and it gives instant attention to the event. That said, we couldn't be happier to invite everyone to "Why Waste A Good Planet?," our next show at Art On Broadway Gallery, 12570 SW Broadway in Beaverton. An evening reception to celebrate new work will be held on Saturday, April 2, from 6 to 9 p.m.

This show is a tribute to the planet Earth - its beauty and its creatures - and our need to keep it safe; it features local artists Chris Helton and Joe Pogan. Chris easily moves from one medium to another and she clearly shows her skills with this exhibit of the same scene repainted in three different materials - watercolor, pastel, and acrylic.

Joe is known for his exceptional ability to create wildlife from discarded metal. Ordinary mismatched spoons become feathers; a cluster of nails becomes a nest; screws, keys, bolts, coins cover the surfaces of his birds and fish - no two exactly alike.

We hope you can join us for complimentary wine and refreshments, and a chance to visit with all the artists in our gallery. Mark your calendars now. This show will continue through April 30. The gallery is now open Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Art On Broadway Partners with Cat Adoption Team

The Cat With The Pearl Earring by D. Sanson

Our March 5 reception will be a fundraiser for the Cat Adoption Team in Sherwood. Carlton Cellars will conduct wine tasting, and there will be raffles for wine and cat-themed gift baskets, along with some cat-friendly artwork for sale.

Artist Joni Mitchell and her husband, Bob Ewing, are active supporters of CAT and rescued all five of their family of cats through the organization. One of their family members, Princess Odie, is Miss December for the 2011 CAT calendar and will be in attendance throughout the evening.

Hours for the reception have been extended at the request of CAT; guests can stop by between 5 and 9 p.m. and enjoy complimentary refreshments and a chance to visit with member artists.

The gallery has four new artists this month with fresh and exciting artwork. Kris and Willy Paul from Lake Oswego offer naked raku ceramic sculpture and black/white photography on metal; Sue Jensen of Portland introduces encaustic painting to the gallery; and Rae Campbell of Tigard brings wonderful fused glass artwork to our space.

Drawing Classes Starting at Art On Broadway Gallery

Donna Sanson will offer Beginning Drawing Classes for Adults starting in March. If you ever thought about taking a drawing class, or if it's been a long time since you did and you need a refresher, then this is the opportunity you've been waiting for. Classes are scheduled for Mondays and students can sign up for either a 1 to 3 afternoon session or a 6 to 8 evening session. The fee includes all basic materials. One week into 2011 already. Still having to concentrate when I record the date on a check, but with online banking there aren't too many checks to write these days.

The new show at Amato's - soon to be Art On Broadway Gallery - is installed and ready for visitors. "New Year, New Works" opened on Tuesday and will continue through Saturday, January 29. The artists' reception is this Saturday, January 8, between 6 and 9 p.m. Bossa Duo will entertain us with live music, and we'll have wine and tasty refreshments for visitors to enjoy. Plan to stop by.

Bert Cohen and myself (Donna Sanson) are featured in January, but all twelve member artists have new and exciting work on display.

Bert has created some stunning silver and crystal jewelry that she will introduce, and I'll have paintings of European scenes that focus on shapes and patterns.

You'll be sure to enjoy the beautiful winter snow scenes by Chris Helton, the always delightful metal sculpture work of Joe Pogan, the striking color and freedom of Nikki Dilbeck and Bruce Ulrich's abstract acrylics, the mastery of traditional oil painting by Linda J. Baker, and the delicious glass work by Diane Ahrendt. Beth O'Mahony recently included fiber art along with her raku and stoneware offerings, Joni Mitchell has added stone jewelry along with her stone sculpture, and Gretha Lindwood is working in both pastel and oil these days. Annie Salness' acrylics are still on display with us and we are thrilled to hear that she is back in her studio again. Go Annie!

Annie's Awesome Evening

Our very own Annie Salness was honored Tuesday night by her family, friends, and community with an evening to celebrate her spirit and the love we all have for her. Her closet friends and neighbors put together an awesome fundraiser based on prints of Annie's work and donations by a community of fellow artists. Annie surprised us with her presence and what a joy it was to see her, looking radiant as always in a Christmas green sweater and smiling face and eyes.

Joe Pogan's donation of "Bird on a Hitch" was the first piece of artwork to sell - and well over the asking price. Attendees were very generous and the event was an overall success - happy crowd of people, yummy desserts and coffee, music in the air, and artwork all around. Go Annie.

We're all set for our holiday tree event. The new artwork is in place, the trees are installed, the cookies have been made, and
the gallery is decorated.

We hope to have a good crowd tomorrow afternoon to see the new art, to enjoy the live holiday music, to nibble on the "World's Best Sugar Cookies," (a recipe from the kitchen of dear Mrs. Donovan), and to bid on ten of the most delightful little holiday trees you could ever hope to see in one place at one time.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas....

With a chill in the air and some snow on the ground, I found myself motivated to add a touch of holiday spirit to the window displays at Amato's Gallery.

One of the things I loved as a child was going "downtown" to see the holiday windows at Kaufmann's, Gimbels, and Hornes department stores in Pittsburgh, PA. My husband and I continued that tradition with our own children when we lived outside San Francisco. Each year we would ride the BART train into the city to see the wonderful Christmas displays in and around Union Square and up on Nob Hill.

With our budget, we can't compete with the big stores, but with a little bit of this and a touch of that we can create a festive feeling for the shoppers who walk past our gallery on Broadway Street in Beaverton.

Glitter and glowing ornaments, metallic papers and ribbons, catch the light and add some sparkle to even the most overcast day.

Another tree is ready for auction at Amato's.

This is a detail of Joni Mitchell's hand sculpted holiday tree. Joni started with a block of lightweight concrete and ended with a flowing spiral tree, sparkling with hints of black marble and rhinestones. The result is elegant and timeless.

All ten trees will be installed by November 30 at Amato's in preparation for our holiday celebration on Saturday, December 4, from 1 pm to 4 pm. Guests will be treated to homemade cookies and punch, and seasonal live music by Basso Duo.

You won't want to miss the chance to see these one-of-a-kind artist designed creations. Each one is truly unique. As always, our artists will be available to discuss their artwork and explain how and why they do what they do.

Bidding for the trees will start at the reception and continue for the next two weeks to give the public ample opportunity to view and select their favorite tree. I'm giving you a little sneak peek at three of the holiday trees to be auctioned off at Amato's in December. One is a mobile tree, a second is a tree of "jewels," and a third is adorned in all watercolor ornaments. The unveiling of all ten trees especially designed for this event will take place at our monthly reception on Saturday, December 4, starting at 1 p.m.

Amato's gallery will be sparkling with new artwork, holiday punch, sugar cookies, and tree sculptures designed and handmade by our talented member artists. The designs are as clever and diversified as the personalities of each artist. Bassa Duo will be there with their special blend of live music to add to the afternoon's entertainment. A Good Crowd Tonight

Despite the rain, we had a very good turnout tonight at the reception for Bruce Ulrich. Our first guests of the evening were Mayor Denny Doyle and his wife; visitors continued to fill the gallery until closing time.

Bruce's paintings have a strong visual impact; they radiate color and a sense of adventure and risk. Whether he works with watercolor on Yupo paper or acrylic on canvas, you feel Bruce's joy in experimenting with a variety of materials His show will run through Tuesday, November 30.

Most of Amato's other artists were in attendance tonight. Joe Pogan, who works in found metal, and Bruce posed for a photo; and Mayor Doyle and Paul Cohen discussed Broadway Street and the many new changes that are taking place on our block.

There were lots of new faces in the crowd this evening, as well as many familiar ones. We sincerely appreciate everyone who attends and supports our special events. It was a fun party, catered by our next door neighbor - Gloria's Secret Cafe; guests enjoyed mini sandwiches, cheeses, apple slices with caramel dip, wine, hot apple cider, and a special dessert bar made with dried cherries and pecans.

Presentation to Washington County Public Affairs Forum

I've been asked to make a presentation to the Washington County Public Affairs Forum in a week. Jayne Scott, Director of the Beaverton Arts Commission, invited me to share the journey that Amato's Gallery has taken since last February when local artists joined with Karen Amato and her floral design business. We've undergone a number of significant changes since then, including refurbishing and moving into a formerly empty store front on SW Broadway in Beaverton's historic district.

What should I talk about, what should I say? I decided to let the artwork do most of the talking for me since we are so fortunate to represent twelve very talented and diverse award-winning artists. Our gallery displays an outstanding assortment of sculpture in glass, metal, stone and clay; memorable two-dimensional images in oil, acrylic, pastel and watercolor; and stylish hand-crafted jewelry. I've included some images here that will be part of the power point presentation.

I'll also share how proud we are to be able to showcase the talent of local artists and to establish a welcoming fine art gallery within our own community. Collaboration works, and Amato's is certainly a good example of how indiviiduals' dreams, efforts, and talents can combine to achieve a group's goals.

Plans for Broadway Street in the news!

In Thursday's edition of the Beaverton Valley Times there was an article on another independent small business reinventing itself much like Amato's Floral did when Karen invited local artists to exhibit in her flower and gift shop in early 2010. A&P, at the corner of Broadway and Watson, has added a line of specialty goods including locally made organic cranberry juice, peach jam marinades, peanut brittle, cayenne caramels, and flavored balsalmic vinegars to their successful appliance repair parts business. It seems like an unusual pairing of merchandise, but the owners were looking for something fun and different. We wish them much success.

The article goes on to say, "Plans for Broadway have shifted as the Civic Plan evolves. Last month, citizens and the city considered a couplet, where Canyon Road and Broadway would be one-way streets and define a new downtown. That plan has since been scrapped, and the Civic Plan is looking at Broadway as a festival street, which could feature street trees and benches, slow speeds for cars and could be closed to cars for fairs or events."

Sounds like good news for Amato's Gallery and other small specialty shops and restaurants. Read the entire article in the October 21 Beaverton Valley Times.

Fine Art & Interior Design Workshop

Amato's Art Gallery in Beaverton and Macadam Floor and Design in Southwest Portland are working together to present a Fine Art and Design Workshop. The event is free and will take place on Wednesday, July 21, 2010, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Amato's recently opened gallery, 12320 S.W. 1st Street, Beaverton 97005.

Macadam's professional interior designer, Jenny Ruth, will offer complimentary advice on choosing colors, remodeling with green materials, designing solutions for specific spaces, etc. She is an Associate Member of the Northwest Society of Interior Designers and encourages individuals to bring their questions and design dilemmas to be addressed during the evening. In addition, Jenny will discuss how original artwork can enhance your home or office and bring you lasting pleasure. Monday evenings, July 5, 12, 19, and 26, from 6-8 p.m., I'll be teaching drawing classes at Amato's, 12320 SW 1st Street, Beaverton 97005. Fee for the 4 classes is $90 and includes materials. Registration is limited to eight students.

It will be fun to teach within the inspiring atmosphere of this fine art gallery. We'll use this real life set-ups and photographs as references. My goal as an instructor is to teach students to really see what they observe by studying shape, value and relationships.

Fine art gallery rises in Beaverton from business owner’s imagination

Area fine artists find Beaverton does have a gallery to serve their needs

From floral arrangements to gift items to wine, chocolate and coffee, Amato’s on First Street in Beaverton offers a wide variety of products. Still, when 2010 began, owner Karen Amato was looking to diversify her business and decided to put a posting on Craigslist, seeking local artists interested in displaying their work. Beaverton’s Brenda Boylan was browsing Craigslist on New Year’s Day when she came across the listing.

“I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, who is doing this?’ We know a lot of artists who have really been wanting to have a gallery in Beaverton for some time. There’s nothing out here that you would call a fine art gallery in the Beaverton area,” recalls Boylan.

Boylan began gathering artists whose work would complement one another, including Michael Orwick, who lives blocks away from Boylan, and Cedar Mills resident Gretha Lindwood. The facility operates as an artist-run gallery; each of the hand-picked artists displays work, helps pay the cost of rent and works together as a team – especially when preparing for the shows they host every few months.

“This area has a lot of creative people,” says Lindwood.

Apparently, this area also has a lot of people who appreciate creativity. At its first gala in February, the gallery was so packed, visitors had to leave and come back to wait for the area to clear out.

“We counted around 120 people,” said Boylan. “Throughout the course of the evening, from the time it opened until it closed, there were people here, which was fabulous. We loved that we had that kind of response.”

Most of the artists at Amato’s are veterans of the art scene and display their work at various shows throughout the region – and sometimes throughout the country. Many of the painters have been meeting for years for plein air (painting outside in the tradition of French impressionists). They take monthly field trips throughout the area to paint outdoors and spend time together, combining art, friendship, sunshine and nature.

The background of the artists who display at Amato’s is as varied as the artwork itself. Orwick began as a children’s book illustrator and was able to get his illustrations into galleries.

“It was more whimsical work,” Orwick says. “I began to daydream about what I’d do when I retired and was able to make the transition over to do landscapes. So, now I know what I’ll do when I retire.”

Boylan has a degree in Applied Art & Design. She says graphic design did not come naturally; she was always drawn to illustration and painting classes in school.

“But that was where the money was, and my parents encouraged it so I’d have a career,” Boylan says. “I slogged through that until I finally decided I just couldn’t take it anymore and decided to stay home, paint and raise kids. People kept asking me, ‘Why aren’t you selling in a gallery?’ I started looking into that and, step by step, got into shows regionally and now nationally.”

When Lindood graduated from art school in Seattle, her first job was as a retail illustrator doing fashion illustrations.

“That was really fun. I really liked that,” Lindwood says, “But that sort of went away when photography took over. I was doing graphic design also – layout, they called it in those days – and it was a good creative outlet for me. That was mostly in black and white. When I started working in color, it was like Dorothy in Kansas when she steps out of the black and white world and lands in Oz.”

Until last year, Lindwood was working as a graphic designer for Joe’s. Since that company shut down, she has been focusing more and more of her creative energy on painting.

Though Lindwood, Boylan and Orwick are all painters, the Westside artists who display at Amato’s work in a variety of mediums. Painters, sculptors and jewelry makers all come together to bring the best of their work to the Beaverton community.

A fine art gallery in Beaverton is refreshing, but perhaps most refreshing is the camaraderie, lack of competition and passion these artists have for their work.

“I love the social aspect of being an artist,” says Boylan.

“It’s very rewarding when somebody loves a piece enough to part with their money because that represents their time and their energy,” says Lindwood. “What did it take for them to make that money? It’s very validating and humbling.”

“How many jobs get celebrated?” asks Orwick. “When we come out, there’s music and food and wine and people. It’s a party.”

Amato's Gallery announces a new show of paintings to celebrate artists' interpretations of summer. Featured in the exhibit are works by Linda J. Three shows featuring current and past Portland Open Studios artists are open this weekend. Just in time for Valentines Day, you can visit and select a work of art for your sweetheart.

Showing at the new Amato’s Gallery in Beaverton are many past and present Portland Open Studios artists including Diane Ahrendt, Brenda Boylan, Chris Helton, Gretha Lindwood, Joni Mitchell, Michael Orwick, Joe Pogan and Donna Sanson.

Amato’s Gallery is opening in the heart of Beaverton just in time for Valentine’s Day. Featuring fine art from the Northwest in a wide variety of media including pastels, water color and oil paintings, glass, ceramics and sculpture in stone and metal, this new gallery is located inside Amato’s Floral, Wine and Gifts at 12320 SW 1st in Beaverton. The opening reception is Friday, February 12th from 5:30pm to 9pm.

Breakfast in the Gallery at Amato Galler

This weekend is Amato Gallery's "Breakfast in the Gallery. A continental-style breakfast will be provided by Beaverton Bakery to visitors, along with concurring demos by Chris Helton and Gretha Lindwood.

Every Saturday morning in March, Amato's Gallery in downtown Beaverton will host "Breakfast in the Gallery," from 9 to 11 a.m. Coffee and continental fare will be provided, along with artists' demonstrations in a variety of media. Mark your calendars and start your Saturdays with a dose of artistic inspiration. Amato's Gallery is located within Amato's Florals, 12320 SW 1st Street, Beaverton.

We celebrated our official opening on February 12, with an artists' reception that was lively and very well attended. I'm exhibiting my work there along with sixteen other award-winning area artists; you can imagine how excited we all are to have a permanent fine art gallery in historic downtown Beaverton.

Stop in Monday through Saturday, 10 to 4, to see sculptures by Joni Mitchell, Joe Pogan and John Wisener; glasswork by Diane Ahrendt; ceramics by Beth O'Mahony; jewelry by Bert Cohen, Sheri Gorman, and Rosie Long; oils by Linda Baker and Michael Orwick; pastels by Brenda Boylan, Gretha Lindwood and Christy Perrine; acrylics by Chris Helton and Annie Salness; and watercolors by me. It's a very talented group and I'm proud to be a part of this exciting venture.
