"Yesterday, Today, & Tomorrow," Guest Show for August

Seventeen guest artists have their work on exhibit this month at Art On Broadway. Everything from clay, stoneware, photograph, watercolor, pastel, oil, linocut, wood cut, acrylic and silk painting is included. Successful First Friday

Carli Kruse did a wonderful demo last night, entertaining visitors to First Friday and educating all of us on the ins and outs of lampwork bead making. Despite the hot weather, she remained behind the propane driven torch and created stunning glass beads which will soon become part of new earrings or necklaces. A big thank you to Carli.

Join us September 7 at First Friday when Rae Campbell will demonstrate the art of fused and high fired glass design.

Our second Silent Auction Event at First Friday was very well received by the public; 11 of our artists sold 14 pieces of original artwork to happy patrons who purchased wonderful pieces of art at bargain prices.

Summer Has Arrived

Summer has finally arrived for us - a full week of sun and temperatures in the 80's. It's a long time coming but we sure love it when it gets here. The fine weather was a factor in the strong turnout we had for July's First Friday in downtown Beaverton; we launched our Silent Auction promotion this month with plans to continue this popular event each First Friday through October. Ten happy customers went home with wonderful art bargains created by our members. We'll have more artists participating with more auction items in August. The art demonstration by Linda Baker amazed our visitors as they watched her turn a blank canvas into a nearly completed still life in less than three hours. One of Linda's oil paintings, "Willow Ware Bowl," is shown below. Carli Kruse, who creates glass beads and pendants, will share her flamework skills during First Friday on August 3.

You will surely want to attend our Artists Reception on August 11 when we honor Annie Salness and her exhibit of "Cityscapes." Annie suffered a stroke in October of 2010 and was paralyzed on her entire right side. Although she has made a remarkable comeback, she still cannot use her right hand. Through strength and determination, Annie has retrained herself to paint left-handed - and the results are wonderful. Come visit with Annie and see her latest work up close and personal!

Our guest show in August will feature work with the theme of "Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow" and is open to all local artists. Deadline for entry is Saturday, August 4, at 5 p.m. Contact the gallery for entry forms and terms, or pick one up in person.

There's a lot going on at Art On Broadway. We are open Tuesday thru Saturday and our summer hours have been extended until 6 p.m.

A Burst of Color for July

Rae Campbell and Nikki Dilbeck share their love for color in our July show, "Color Burst," opening on July 6 and continuing through August 4. The two artists will be honored with an Artists Reception on Saturday, July 7, from 6 to 9 p.m. Campbell works in fused glass and Dilbeck creates abstract acrylic paintings. Both combine color in exciting and innovative designs. Please plan to join us for an enjoyable evening!

"Colors Of The Season," Thru 6/2/2012

There is still time to see this wonderful exhibit of 33 plein air paintings by 14 artists who are part of the Westside Art Guide. The majority of the artists live in or around Beaverton OR and paint together on location, capturing the beauty of the Willamette Valley, the Oregon Coast, and the Columbia River Gorge areas. Be sure to visit Art On Broadway before the exhibit closes on Saturday, June 2. Gretha Lindwood's "Countryside Walk" is one of the pastel paintings you will have an opportunity to see in person. Preview of June at Art On Broadway

In honor of Father's Day on June 17, Art On Broadway will feature "Art For The Man Cave." Our Artists Reception - celebrating original artwork by both Member Artists and Guest Artists - will be held on Saturday, June 9, from 6 to 9 p.m. As always, the gallery offers wine and refreshments as part of our reception. The exhibit opens on June 8 and continues through June 30, with the gallery open during summer hours from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Stephen Kekule's "Elevator" painting will be one of many paintings featured in this exhibit.

In addition, Art On Broadway continues its participation in Beaverton's First Friday event which takes place throughout the downtown on June 1 from 5-9 p.m. Kris Paul will be on hand to share her knowledge of working with clay. She intends to demonstrate how she creates a hand-built sculpture from a block of clay. You won't want to miss Kris at work!

The Merry Month Of May

This is a very busy month at the gallery - two new events will launch in May; we will also celebrate the installation of our featured member show and featured guest show.

Member artists Roberta Babcock and Clarise Kinney are featured in "The Dog & Pony Show." The show opens on May 4 and runs through June 2. Both artists have a sense of humor and a love of animals, and these characteristics are clearly depicted in their art. Roberta works in fiber clay, creating sculptures with elongated limbs and exaggerated personalities, while Clarise's pet portraits capture wet noses and sensitive eyes. This exhibit is sure to be a real crowd pleaser. Please join us for our Artists Reception on Saturday, May 5, between 6 and 9 p.m. for wine, refreshments, and lively conversation. The guest show in the West Wing of the gallery will feature 33 plein air landscapes by 14 members of the Westside Art Guide. Pastel paintings by Brenda Boylan, Rose Caffarelli, Nathalie Equall, Bev Drew Kindley, Gretha Lindwood, Patty McMahan, and Mary McCoy make up a portion of "Colors Of The Season," along with watercolors by Allen Greene, charcoals by George Schweser, and oils by Jeanne Cuddeford, Patty Gifford, Mary Luzinski, Sarah Pugh, and Anne H. Yates. Our guest artists share the May 5 reception with Roberta and Clarise. Last month's Trunk Show with Elaine Tan was a big success. As a follow up, Donna Sanson will host a one-time Inventory Reduction Sale, with discounts on many of her watercolor paintings and fine art prints. Just like the trunk show, Donna's event will be scheduled during special gallery hours, from 5-8 p.m. on Saturday, May 19, and 11-4 on Sunday, May 20. Discounts from 10-30% will be offered, along with wine and refreshments. Plan to attend and let Donna help you select a painting that connects with you personally.

And finally, Art On Broadway will be a key player in Beaverton's First Friday event which launches on Friday, May 4. The gallery will offer extended hours, along with about 30 other downtown businesses. Roberta Babcock will be at the gallery to demonstrate her process for working with fiber clay and to discuss the various stages of preparation and formation of her finished sculptures. Many of the businesses will have fun activities, discounted products, raffles, special happy hour menus, live music, free refreshments, and costumed characters. The Beaverton History Center will be open with docents on hand, and Arthur Murray Dance Studio will open its doors to the public from 8:30 to 10. First Friday will continue through the summer and end on October 5.

Call to Artists for June Guest Show

Art On Broadway will celebrate the month of June and Father's Day with a show targeted at the masculine sex. "Art For The Man Cave" will be the theme for our next open juried show. Contact the gallery for an application for this one-month event scheduled to open on June 9 and run through June 30. Wall art, 3D and jewelry will be considered.

Elaine Tan Joins Art On Broadway

We are so pleased to announce that Elaine Tan, Jewelry Artist and Designer, will join our gallery starting in April. Elaine specializes in earring and necklace design that is sophisticated and timeless. In addition to Art On Broadway, she is an exhibiting artist with Local 14, Celebration of Creativity, and Lunaria Gallery in Silverton, OR.

Not only does Elaine bring her artistic aestetics to the gallery, but she comes with lots of energy and ideas. She suggested we conduct regular Trunk Show events; so beginning in April, the gallery will open during special hours for a weekend-only show. Elaine will start us off on Saturday, April 21 from 5 to 8 p.m., and Sunday, April 22 from 11 to 4 p.m. She will be available to talk about the unique features of each piece in her collection and help each guest select the perfect necklace or pair of earrings to fit her style and personality. Mother's Day is May 13, and a piece of jewelry designed by Elaine Tan would make a perfect gift.

To Be Featured In April - "Tasting Pleasure," Paintings by Bruce Ulrich

Bruce Ulrich's featured show, "Tasting Pleasure," will reveal two distinct ways he expresses his passion for the subject.

"My inspiration is an enjoyment and love of food and wine with all the thoughts, memories and pleasures you feel while enjoying a meal with friends," explains Ulrich. "I explore how to express these feelings in paint - either with a painting that is object-based or one that is more about expressing colors and the essence of the moment."

The gallery will host a free reception in Bruce's honor on Saturday, April 7, between 6 and 9 p.m. Enjoy the pleasure of complimentary wine and refreshments as you enjoy Bruce's latest artwork! The show will run through April 28.

"Oregon Originals" Guest Show

Allen Greene's "West Rim Crater Lake" watercolor is one of 26 entries selected for our guest exhibit this month at Art On Broadway. An open call asked artists to submit work that had a connection to the state of Oregon and 31 artists responded with works in fiber, glass, clay, encaustic, oil, acrylic, pastel and watercolor. The show continues through April 28, when one artist will receive a $50 gift certificate to Blick Arts based on People's Choice voting. We hope you will come see the show and vote for your favorite entry.

March is a Month of "Transformation"

They say it comes in like a lion and out like a lamb. One thing for sure, March is a month of change and the Members Group Show at Art On Broadway will reflect how our artists interpret change in a show titled "Transformation." We hope you will visit the gallery between March 8 and March 31 to see this interesting show. The Artists Reception will take place on Saturday, March 10, from 6 to 9 p.m. with complimentary refreshments and an opportunity to talk directly with our artists.

Our guest show for January and February offers 31 artworks by 21 guest artists and is titled "Romantic Forms." It includes landscape, figurative work, portraiture, and abstract - all exciting and ecletic interpretations of the subject. Paul Mathenia, Art On Broadway Member Artist, To Have Work Featured at West Coast Art & Frame Convention

We are proud to share the news that Paul Mathenia, one of our member artists, had a new painting selected by Arthur A. Kaplan and Galaxy Group Publishing to be their feature piece at the West Coast Art & Frame Convention in Las Vegas. The convention opens on January 30 and Paul will be present for the unveiling.

The 30x30 acrylic on stretched canvas is titled, "Magnolia Elegance," and we hope to have it on display in our gallery at the conclusion of the convention. Congratulations Paul!

2012 Begins

As 2011 draws to a close, we would like to thank everyone who came to our receptions and special events during the year, who purchased artwork from the gallery, who encouraged us with their kind words and expressions of support. We want to thank our spouses, partners, families and friends who know how much we love what we do and who help make it possible for us to do it. A big thank you as well to members of the media who help us spread the word of what's happening each month at Art On Broadway. We are blessed with many supporters and we appreciate each and every one of you. The gallery keeps getting better and our presence in the community is stronger and well respected.

We will start the new year with a member group show featuring work by all 20 of our talented artists. We invite the public to an Artists Reception on Saturday, January 7, from 6 to 9 p.m. Join us for a glass of wine and a lively discussion of what we do, and how and why we do it!

"Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree..."

Rockefeller Center and the White House might have some of the most celebrated Christmas trees each year, but Art On Broadway artists have created some of the most original. This is our second annual Holiday Tree Sculptures exhibit and once again we have trees that are festive and fun, elegant and sophisticated. The gallery's proceeds from the sale of these one-of-a-kind trees will be donated to the Community Transitional School in NE Portland, which educates children from homeless families.

The gallery will host a reception for this show on Saturday, December 3, from 6 to 9 p.m., and the exhibit will run through the 29th of the month.

In addition to the holiday trees and our usual display of outstanding original artwork, we have a special gift section this month with handmade items by our artists priced from $3-$20.

The reception for our Members Group Show on November 5 was very well attended and comments on the new exhibit were exciting to hear.

The second reception this month is to honor the PPASP artists show, "Artist to Artist," and will take place on Saturday, November 12, from 6 to 9 p.m. Our receptions are always free, with beverages and refreshments for our guests.

Visitors during November are encouraged to vote for their favorite PPASP painting. A People's Choice Award, in the form of a $50 gift certificate to Dick Blick, will be presented by the gallery to the guest artist whose painting receives the most votes. We hope you will join us and participate in the voting.

"Artist to Artist" Guest Exhibit

Marcia Vanderschaaf's "Peace In The Valley," and Carolyn Rondthaler's "Labyrinth 1 - My Journey," were two of the twenty paintings selected by the Member Artists of Art On Broadway to be in the November guest show at the gallery's Beaverton location.

In addition to VanderSchaaf and Rondthaler, the following Portland Plein Air & Studio Painters have work in this exhibit: Janet Amundson-Splidsboel, Yvonne Branchflower, Rose Caffarelli, Nathalie Equall, Michael Fisher, Brooks Hickerson, Joe Howard, Susan Jensen, Mary Luzinski, Mary McCoy, Kristina Sellers, and Kitty Wallis.

Member Group Show for November

Please join us on Saturday, November 5, from 6 to 9 p.m. for a reception to celebrate our new exhibit of members' work at Art On Broadway. All of our artists will be featured this month so there is much to celebrate. Here's a sneak preview of work by some of our newest members.

Clarise Kinney joined us this summer and her specialty is painting portraits of animals. She is happy to do commissions of family pets and is wonderful at capturing the unique personality of each of her subjects.









If it's sculpture you're looking for, you'll love the fiber clay/raku works by Roberta Babcock. Roberta is a painter turned sculptor, and she incorporates her sense of humor and style into each and every piece she exhibits.

Finally, if you're a fan of Joni Mitchell's stone sculpture, be sure to visit soon. Joni and her husband are moving to Arizona in the very near future and we will no longer be able to display her sculpture once she moves. She will remain an Art On Broadway member, however, and will continue to exhibit her stone jewelry with us.

"Artist to Artist" Invitational

The member artists of Art On Broadway have invited member artists from Portland Plein Air & Studio Painters to enter a juried exhibit at our gallery for the month of November. The gallery will host a reception to honor the artists on Saturday, November 10, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Each PPASP artist had the opportunity to enter from one to three paintings; twenty artists accepted the challenge and will have their entries juried by the member artists from Art On Broadway. Most juried shows have one or two jurors selecting all the finalists. "Artist to Artist" offers a new selection process with each of our 18 member artists choosing only one painting to be in the show. Each of us has a personal opinion of art that's good or even great - and that excites us, moves us, inspires us, teaches us, lingers with us, or stimulates our senses. This show will reveal eighteen paintings that affected the members of Art On Broadway in such a way.

In addition, the public will have an opportunity to vote for their favorite entry among the finalists; at the show's close on November 26, the votes will be tallied and a People's Choice Award will be presented in the form of a Gift Certificate. Be sure to visit the gallery and vote for your favorite plein air painting.

It's Party Time at Art On Broadway

We have two celebration receptions during the week of October 2 at Art On Broadway, so the public will have twice the fun and two opportunities to visit with area artists personally.

Three of our member artists will be featured along with nine other westside artists who were juried into Portland Open Studios this year. The reception on Thursday, October 6, from 6 to 9 will help launch the tour of over 100 Portland area artists who open their studios and demonstrate their techniques during the second and third weekends in October. Kris Paul, Willy Paul, and Bruce Ulrich are all members of our gallery and are featured for this reception along with Marta Farris, Patti Issacs, Carli Schulz Kruse, Katherine Mean, Chris Mooney, Barbara Paanaker, Selene Rabinovitz,Deborah Shapiro,and Kitty Wallis. Portland Open Studio Tour Guides will be on sale during the reception.

Our second reception this week honors Myla Keller. Myla is an avid reader and world traveler and has been a member artist of Art On Broadway since spring of this year. She is showing works inspired by her travels and her passion for color and shape. Our reception for Myla takes place on Saturday, October 8, from 6 to 9 p.m. with complimentary wine and refreshments. The exhibit includes impressionist paintings in pastel and mixed media, and abstract studies in watercolor and mixed media. A fascinating mix from a fascinating woman!

Inspiration

I got to see part of Sue Jensen's collage demonstration last Saturday at Art On Broadway and was inspired to try more of this delightful art form on my own. Sue completed three small collages during the morning by applying beautifully colored hand-stamped and hand-painted papers to artist panels. She's getting ready for the Local 14 show at the World Forestry Center later this month.

When I got to Art Media yesterday, I couldn't help but notice the big transformation from AM to its new owner Dick Blick. No matter who owns it, an art supply store is certainly an inspiring place for an artist and with Sue's demo still on my mind, I headed for the handmade papers. I purchased about a dozen new sheets of lucious warm colored papers along with acrylic paints, brushes, and panel supports.

I also picked up the latest edition of "international artist" magazine which has a cover of a wonderful watercolor painting by Alvaro Casagnet, a world respected watercolorist from Uraguay. More of Alvaro's urban landscapes and interiors accompany the article about him. More info and imagery to inspire!

Breakfast In The Gallery Demos

Our series of art demonstrations along with complimentary breakfasts is over for 2011. Our artists did a terrific job demonstrating their specific areas of expertise starting in May with pastel and finishing in September with collage. "The Finely Drawn Image" featuring Steve Kekule and Paul Mathenia

The above image is titled "The Bike Path," and was inspired by a Sunriver, Oregon location where Paul Mathenia returns each year. Paul is a seasoned painter who works easily in acrylic, watercolor, and oil, and has been an inspiring teacher to countless students over the years. He is paired with another artist whose skillful drawing ability is also evident in each and every painting. Steve Kekule's finely drawn images set moods and tell stories within the solid forms of his compositions. Both gentlemen have conquered the challenge of hand-eye coordination, and have gone beyond. Steve's painting titled, "Cables, Bolts and Brackets" is shown below.

Silent Auction - Encaustic Painting Demo - All at the Beaverton Old Town Festival

Art On Broadway is doing its part to attract folks throughout the day to the Beaverton Old Town Festival on Saturday, August 27. The parade and festival take place directly in front of our gallery.

Sue Jensen will give a free demonstration of the art of encaustic painting inside the gallery during the afternoon. Sue teaches private classes and just finished a workshop at Menucha earlier this month. Look for her finished acrylic, encaustic and collage paintings that are displayed throughout the gallery space.

In addition, we will host a Silent Auction of items created by our members and offered to the public at very reasonable starting prices. The auction will begin at 11 a.m. and bidding on the first round of items will close at noon. Each hour new artwork will be presented for the next hour of bidding, until the close of the auction at 5 p.m. This is your chance to buy art at a bargain!

We are excited about this special event and hope you'll decide to participate.

A Closing Reception for "A Focus On Black & White"

I hope you'll come out and see this exceptional show before it closes on September 3. As a matter of fact, we are having a closing reception for "A Focus On Black & White" because we want as many people as possible to see this exhibit of tactile intrigue in the form of both ceramic and photographic artwork. This will be our first ever closing reception - an idea we're "borrowing" from a gallery in Southeast Portland. Enjoy a glass of wine on Wednesday evening, August 31, from 6 to 9 p.m., as you visit with Kris and Willy Paul and discover what motivates them to create.

A Focus On Black & White

The naked raku ceramic designs of Kris Paul and the black & white photography of her husband Willy Paul are featured in August at the gallery. A reception honoring their creativity will be held on Saturday, August 6, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The show continues through Saturday, September 3. We hope you will have an opportunity to join us.
