A "Must See" Exhibit - "Bloom" by Sam Hingston

Talk about a "wow" moment. The wooden flower sculptures being featured in March at Art On Broadway Gallery create exactly that kind of visual experience for visitors when they enter the door. Sam Hingston put his imagination, his expert skill, and his gifted sense of design into the creation of ten truly unique and stunning pieces of artwork. It is an exhibit you won't want to miss.

The show opened on March 2 and continues through April 2, with a free Artists Reception on Saturday, March 9, from 5 to 8 p.m. Join us for wine and light refreshments, and learn first hand from Sam how this collection of "blooms" came to be.

March Guest Show

Sixteen local guest artists have work in the March "Call to Artists" exhibit at Art On Broadway Gallery. Paintings in acrylic, oil, and watercolor, photography, metal, ceramic, and glass work are all represented. The title for the show is "Patterns & Nature."

March Changes

Sad to see three of our member artists leave our group. It has been such a pleasure to represent the work of Roberta Babcock, Alex Boyden, and Sandy Dutko. We hope their busy schedules will once again allow them time to be part of  Art On Broadway Gallery.

Many of you are familiar with Roberta's work - and some of you own one of her whimsical horses, dogs, cats, and human figures. They have graced our windows and pedestals for years, grabbing the attention of passersby and luring them into the gallery.

 

 

Alex's loose and luscious pastel landscapes always invited the viewer to look closer, to see more, and to appreciate the beauty of a simple scene and a quiet moment.

Sandy is the busiest lady I know and her experimental approach to painting results in one success after another. She handles watercolor, acrylic, and collage with such ease.

Welcome Irena Ellis and Diana LoMeiHing

We couldn't be happier to welcome two new painters to our gallery membership. Irena Ellis and Diana LoMeiHing joined us on the first of March and we are honored to have them as members.

Irena Ellis is a resident of West Linn and works in encaustic and cold wax. Two of her paintings that are on exhibit through April are shown below.

Diana was born in China, educated in Italy, and recently moved to Portland with her photographer husband Bill Hornaday. She works primarily in a combination of watercolor and acrylic.

February's Guest Show - "Time & Place"

Scott Cutler is one of eleven guest artists showing artwork on our Guest Wall this month. The show continues through February 27. A reception to honor the artists is planned for Saturday, February 13, from 5 to 8 p.m. Come celebrate an early Valentines Day with us and talk art with Scott and the other artists in attendance.

Inside Monet's World

Last September I got to visit Giverny, and the home and gardens of Claude Monet. Of course I took photos and when I came across them this week, I thought they would make an interesting post to the blog.

Monet spent a long time choosing the right blue-green paint for the windows and stair rails so they worked well with the pinkish tone of the home's exterior.

"Everywhere in Monet's house you come across the same colors as in his pictures and his garden. In effect, his aesthetic concept embraced the entire world that he lived in."

The above photos are of Monet's first studio which was the former barn on the western side of the house. This space later became a day room used by the entire family. Monet and his second wife Alice lived here along with eight children, two from Monet's marriage to Camille Monet and six from Alice's first marriage.

The kitchen and dining room were bright and sunny. The Japanese prints on the walls were arranged by Monet himself.

"The everyday life of the painter and his family in Giverny followed a strict pattern. Every morning, Monet got up between four and five, sometimes had a cold bath, and after a substantial breakfast of bacon and eggs, cheese and jam along with baguettes he began painting at six o'clock."

February's Featured Artist - Alex Boyden

Alex's featured show, "The Heart of the Matter," will open on Wednesday, February 3. Typically a painter of landscapes, Alex took a different direction for the work in this month's show, which is inspired by artichokes and Alex's father. Come to the reception on Saturday, February 13, from 5 to 8 p.m. and discuss the show in person with Alex.

Alex studied art at L'Ecole de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris, Hamilton College in Clinton N.Y., and Haystack School of Arts and Crafts in Deer Isle, ME. She graduated from Rhode Island School of Design in 1991 with a BFA. She participated in Portland Open Studios in 2013, had work included in Street of Dreams and CAP Art Auction in 2014, and has been a member of Art On Broadway for two years.  

Her paintings seem simple at first, but they invite the viewer to take a longer look and discover the complexities within each piece. Stop by the gallery during February and look closely at these exciting paintings and drawings.     



Gretha is Teaching

Gretha Lindwood is now teaching pastel. If you've ever wanted to try painting with pastels, you should contact Gretha for details. Two of her beauties are shown below and are currently available at Art On Broadway through the end of February.

I love Paris in the Springtime, I love Paris in the Fall....

I have been to Paris twice and both times the city stole my heart - it's beauty, it's energy, it's architecture, it's sense of freedom, and it's dedication to art. When the newspaper was attacked over a year ago, I felt compelled to express my love for the City of Light and for all it represents to me - the result was the collage depicted below. Currently available at Art On Broadway.

This Beauty Is By Linda Baker

Linda Baker has been a member of Art On Broadway from the very beginning. From our early days to the present, visitors to the gallery marvel at her traditional still life oil paintings. I have seen her demo on several occasions and am always amazed at how she creates the illusion of metal or china or cloth by applying paint to canvas.

Guest artist, Najwa Alghabban, stopped by today to share her painting with her mother. The current guest exhibit continues through Friday, January 27.

Beautiful Boxes

Peggy Harkins sculpts beautiful boxes out of blocks of wood and then embellishes them with designs of luscious color. One is shown below - more are available throughout the gallery. Better than candy or flowers because they last a lifetime!

The Movers and Shakers of Marketing

We have formed a new marketing team for Art On Broadway for 2016. The group met for the first time  today to set goals and strategies for 2016 and ended the collaborative effort with five target areas to work on throughout the year - Improved Networking, Effective Advertising, Guest Wall Outreach, Community Building Within Our Membership, and Getting the Most Out of Social Media.

Kris Paul will be our leader in these endeavors and the rest of us will bring our skills and energy to make Art On Broadway known throughout the land!

Pam Nichols - Always On

Pam Nichols is always either making art, thinking art, promoting art, teaching art, and I suspect dreaming art. She is truly a creative person and an inspiration to all who know her. Pam will be our featured artist in April but until then you can see a selection of her recent encaustics, including the two shown below, at AOB now through the end of February. Her prices on the works in the gallery this rotation range from $225 to $1400. Stop by to see "Dreams" and "Dreamcatcher" while they're on exhibit.

A Sale For Wendy

We were closed on Monday, but I had some catch-up work to do and was at the gallery in the afternoon. I noticed a woman trying to open our West Wing door, which was locked. I beckoned her to the main entrance and invited her to come in and look around. She had spotted Wendy Givens' painting, "First Cup," through the window and ended up buying it. A happy customer, a happy artist, and a happy me. So nice to have a sale on a day when we're not even open!

Hello Again!

It's been several months since my last post. "Life" things get in the way sometimes, but hopefully the new year will get me back on track and posting on the latest shows and happenings at Art On Broadway.

Let me begin by wishing all of you a healthy and fulfilling new year with many opportunities to participate in the wonderful world of art. I was able to see the Paul Allen collection at the Portland Art Museum this December and was so glad that I made a point to go.

January will feature a group show in the main gallery with works by all twenty members. The show opens on Wednesday, January 6, and continues through Saturday, January 30.

The guest show on the West Wing wall will feature work by non-member artists who responded to a theme of "Solitude."

A public reception to celebrate both installations is scheduled for Saturday, January 9, from 5 to 8 p.m. Please note this is a change in time from previous receptions - we will start and end an hour earlier than in the past.
