Featured Member Show for May - Pam Nicols & Susette Wilson Present "Commingle"

Color and heat - both are important components of the artwork created by our featured artists for May. Glass artist, Susette Wilson, and encaustic artist, Pam Nichols, explore creative mingling of color and use of heat to work their chosen materials into finished works of art.

Wilson uses vibrant color combinations to create useful and decorative art objects in blown glass. She finds working with hot glass colors can result in happy accidents and unpredictable combinations that keep her growing as an artist.

Nichols' medium is encaustic, a process of painting with molten beeswax, resin, and pure pigment. She heats the paint mixture to 180 degrees F and applies it to wood or paper using natural hair brushes. She uses a torch to fuse the layer of paint and build layers and depth by painting, fusing, painting, and fusing. She often incorporates rusty metals into her pieces for additional texture and interest.

You're invited to a reception to celebrate the new work of these very talented artists on Saturday, May 10, from 6 to 9 p.m. Enjoy music provided by acoustic guitarist, Cary Novotny; and wine compliments of Stoller Family Estate.

 

 

 

"Commingle" opens Wednesday, May 7, and continues through Saturday, May 31. Gallery hours are 11 to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

May Guest Show - Fundraiser for Susan G. Komen

Pam Nichols has lots of artist friends and many of them donated artwork to a cause near and dear to her heart. She is walking sixty miles in three days to raise money for breast cancer research in a fundraiser sponsored by the Susan G. Komen foundation. She has pledged to raise $2500. To accomplish this, she has organized this special exhibit and sale at Art On Broadway for the month of May.

The guest wall in the gallery is covered with works of art from her artist friends, and 100% of the money raised through sales from these donated works will go directly to the Komen foundation. In addition, Pam has pledged 30% of sales during May from her featured work in the main gallery.

Donated work includes jewelry, ceramics, fabric, photography, watercolor, oil, acrylic, glass, encaustic, pastel, and a One-on-One Encaustic Lesson with Bridget Benton. The exhibit opens on Wednesday, May 7, and continues through Saturday, May 31. A reception to launch the sale is scheduled for Saturday, May 10, from 6 to 9 p.m. The gallery will offer refreshments, and wine will be sponsored by Stoller Family Estate.

May Demo - Pam Nichols Shares Encaustic Techniques

Sunday, May 18, from 1 to 3 p.m., should be marked on your calendar as a reminder to see Pam Nichols' demonstration of encaustic techniques. This is part of our ongoing series of free demonstrations at the gallery to educate and enlighten visitors to the creative process behind each of our artists work. Light refreshments are served. Plan to attend.

Welcome to Alexandra Boyden, Sam Hingston, and Margaret C. Carter

April brought a change in membership to the gallery with the departure of Diana Unterspan and Stephen Kekule. We were honored to represent them as members for the past several years and wish them much success in their creative journeys.

At the same time, we wish to welcome Sam Hingston, who joined us in April, and Alexandra Boyden who joins us this month.

Sam is a sculptor who primarily creates mixed media wood sculptures.  He also has been experimenting with other materials as he challenges himself to create complex forms which capture nature in realistic and abstract artwork. Visit his website to learn more about Sam and his work.

Alex is a painter; her medium is soft pastel and her subject is the landscape. Her imagery is both abstract and representational at the same time, and her painting style is soft and loose. Visit her website to learn more about Alex and her work.

 

 

 

Margaret C. Carter 

While our good friend Roberta Babcock is on leave of absence, we are pleased to announce that Margaret C. Carter will be showing her work with us. Margaret is a printmaker and has exhibited many times in Guest Shows at the gallery. Be sure to stop by and see Margaret's work starting in May.

"Floating Worlds" - Oil Paintings by Thomas Eldridge

They say that April showers bring May flowers; but at Art On Broadway Gallery, April brings an opportunity for long time Beaverton resident, Thomas Eldridge, to feature his large contemporary oil paintings. The show opens on Wednesday, April 2, and continues through Saturday, May 3. A reception to celebrate his work will be held on Saturday, April 12, from 6 to 9 p.m. Come visit with Tom and enjoy complimentary refreshments as well as wine from Stoller Family Estate.

 

A graduate of Sunset High School in Beaverton and Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Thomas is an international award-winning oil painter who has been a recipient of the prestigious Schneider Merit Award for his contributions to the fine arts in Southern Oregon. He majored in Fine Arts and studied painting and drawing under the late Robert Alston, and printmaking with master printer Lyle Matoush. He was a member of several planning committees for the Schneider Art Museum and director of the Stevenson Union Art Gallery at Southern Oregon University.

April's Art Demo by Thomas Eldridge



You will want to have a front row seat when Thomas Eldridge "conducts" his multi-media painting demonstration on Sunday, April 13, from 1 to 3 p.m. His large contemporary paintings are created with an energy and confidence that capture the movement of his subjects - swirling water, swimming fish, or plant life dancing in a breeze. As always, our Sunday demos are free.

"Inside & Outside - The World Around Us," Guest Show for April

Our guest show for April is "Inside & Outside - The World Around Us," which opens on April 3 and continues through May 3. Art On Broadway will host an Artists Reception for this show on Saturday, April 12, from 6 to 9 p.m. Stoller Family Estate is providing a selection of wines for the reception and there will be light refreshments for guests to enjoy along with the artwork. Sixteen local artists have entered work for the show this month, including the painting by Melody Cleary shown below.

March Reception at Art On Broadway

Despite the rainy evening, we had a nice turnout at the gallery for our March reception to honor the talents of Diana Unterspan, as well as the 15 guest artists who entered the "Discovery" exhibit. Photos from the reception appear below:

March Featured Show - "19th Century Masterpieces - Contemporary Abstractions In Fiber," by Diana Unterspan

Diana says of her current exhibit, "Words move us, restrain us, give us wings and roots, brighten our days, keep us company in the night, and can be our friends forever. They hurt, sting, and cause us pain, but they also inform, bring invention, new life, and transformation if we let them."

"In this exhibit, I attempt to reveal the connections that exist between most of my visual art and the written word."
