Paint With An Artist Continues

We had our first "Paint With An Artist" event in January with three novice painters happy with the results of their experience. Linda, Anna, and Karen each selected a different painting by a famous artist to use as a reference. They brought their enthusiasm and I provided the materials and guidance to help them complete a painting in a single three-hour session. Linda chose a landscape by Wolf Kahn, Anna chose a Georgia O'Keefe image, and Karen worked from a still life by Paul Cezanne. Each one made some changes to the reference artwork, drew the basic lines of the composition onto their canvases, set up their palettes and began mixing paint. Little by little, the images came to life.

Starting in January, Donna Sanson will offer an opportunity to schedule a time for you and your friends or family members to create your very own original acrylic painting.

If you love art and have always wanted to try your hand at painting, this is the chance you've been waiting for.

Donna will supply all the materials along with her experience as an artist to guide you through the steps necessary to complete a finished painting in one sitting. You can choose from Vincent Van Gogh's famous portrait of his "Chair with Pipe," or Paul Cezanne's "Still Life with Peppermint Bottle."

Holiday Boutique - "Art For The Holidays"

Plans are underway for our holiday boutique in December when shoppers can purchase works of art for gift giving along with handmade objects from a number of guest artists and one-of-a-kind ornaments from our local member artists. Our boutique is like none other because it features only artist created gifts. Enjoy shopping for glass icicles and ornaments, wooden ornaments decorated by hand , ceramic ornaments designed and crafted by one of our artists, holiday cards, quilted table runners and tea wallets, hand-dyed and woven scarves, small oil paintings, paper art cards and books, fabric purses and velvet throws, and luxurious handmade soaps.

"Art For The Holidays" opens on Friday, November 29, and continues through December 28. Our holiday hours have been extended to include Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. and special evening events on Friday, December 6, and Saturday, December 7, until 9 p.m.

"Nature Inspired" - November's Featured Member Show

Gretha Lindwood and Elaine Tan have teamed up this month to present an exhibit of work inspired by Mother Nature's beauty. Gretha's oil studies and completed paintings of local scenes combine with Elaine's carefully crafted natural stone jewelry designs. The show's reception is Saturday, November 9, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Come and enjoy a glass of wine, some light refreshments and conversation with our artists.

This exhibit will continue through the month of November each Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The gallery will be closed on Thanksgiving Day so we can celebrate with our families.

Guest Show for November - "Cohesion"

The Guest Wall for November will feature artwork by a nineteen local guest artists. The subject for the show is "Cohesion," and the work was juried by a panel of Art On Broadway member artists. This is the first time that eight of the nineteen artists have shown their work in the gallery.

The show opens on Wednesday, November 6, and will continue through November 30, with an Artists Reception on Saturday, November 9, from 6 to 9 p.m. Media includes acrylic, basketry, clay, collage, found metal, mixed media, monoprint, pastel, and oil. It is an impressive show!

Visitors familiar with the gallery will recognize work by one of our former member artists, Joe Pogan. Joe creates wonderful 3D sculptures using found metal objects. His fascinating pieces offer the viewer an insight into his thought process and creativity. Whether you are a frequent visitor or will be seeing Joe's work for the first time, you won't be disappointed.

November's Demo Artist - Gretha Lindwood

 

Gretha Lindwood will share her process of painting with soft pastels on sandpaper on Sunday, November 17, from 1 to 3 p.m. Our Sunday demos are always free and open to the public.

 

Using the same techniques she uses when painting en plein air, a French term meaning in the open air, Lindwood crosses the bridge between drawing and painting. Her award winning landscape work imparts an appreciation for the play of light on the subject, evoking an impression of familiarity for the viewer. In describing her work she explains, "It is my job to make the viewer feel they could step into the painting and know how it feels to be there."

Stephen Kekule and Don Schwartz - Featured Exhibitors for October

"Stories Through Pictures - Two Perspectives" is the title of the October featured exhibit at the gallery. It opens on October 3 and continues through November 2, with an Artists Reception on Saturday, October 5, from 6 to 9 p.m. The two gentlemen behind the "stories" and the "pictures" are Stephen Kekule and Don Schwartz.

Steve paints with acrylics, usually on board, and is meticulous about every aspect of his paintings. He studied architecture, which is evident in the images he creates; but beyond the imagery there is a story to be told, or at least implied, and most often left to the viewer to complete.

The stories and pictures that Don has to tell are done with photography - black and white photography. His love of nature is apparent; the viewer can feel the temperature of the image, can listen to the quiet of the moment, can taste and smell the salty sea air, and sense the approaching storm.

Guest Exhibitors for October - International Encaustic Artists of Oregon

Twenty members of the International Encaustic Artists of Oregon will display a total of 40 small encaustic paintings on the Guest Wall during October. The exhibit entitled "Fuse" will open on October 3 and continue through November 2. Enjoy a glass of wine and meet the guest artists at our reception on October 5 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Manuela Kalestiantz, President of the IEA, suggests to viewers, "Allow your senses to take you into this art medium world, where everything is possible and where you can travel as far as your imagination dares to take you."

The encaustic process involves luminous layers of beeswax - combined with Damar resin and colored pigment - to be heated, applied to a surface, manipulated into multi-colored images or carved designs and then fused. Fusing occurs between each layer of material. The word "encaustic" comes from the Greeks and means "to burn in."

October First Friday at Art On Broadway

Art On Broadway will once again remain open until 9 p.m. to give visitors plenty of time to bid on the wonderful selection of Silent Auction artwork created by our member artists. The auction starts at 5 p.m., and continues until 8:30 when bidding closes and sales are finalized. Place your bids early, then stop by often to see if you still have the highest bid on your item(s) of choice. This is a great way to start collecting original art or to add to your existing collection. Don't forget - the holiday season is fast approaching and your art-loving family members and friends would be thrilled to receive a truly unique gift this year! October 4 is the final First Friday of the 2013 season in downtown Beaverton. The special event planned for the month is a Doggie Dress Up Contest. Visitors are encouraged to dress their family pet in an elaborate costume and stroll throughout the downtown. A doggie information area will be set up in the parking lot behind the Peddler's Pack on Watson with representatives from grooming, vet, and pet supply companies on hand. Between 6:30 and 7 p.m., judges will select the Best of Show, and the owners will win an original drawing of their costumed dog created by Art On Broadway artist, Donna Sanson.

New Artists

The gallery is pleased to introduce our two new artists, Thomas Eldridge and Nancy Cuevas. They will replace departing artists Jim Johnstone and Susan Schenk.

Thomas will join us on October 1 and will exhibit abstract and non-objective paintings. He holds a BFA from Southern Oregon University and studied painting under the late Robert Alston and printmaking under master printer Lyle Matoush. Thomas brings his experience as Director of Stevenson Union Art Gallery at SOU along with him.

Nancy Cuevas will join us in November. She primarily works in oils, but explores pastels, charcoal and printmaking as well. Nancy studied at the Art Center of Pasadena and attended Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design in LA and Cogswell Polytechnical College in Sunnyvale, CA.  In 2004, she connected with Portland painter Alexander Rokoff to pursue her interest in portrait and figure painting. Nancy now teaches oil painting and drawing at her own studio, Cuevas Art Studio, in Hillsboro.

October's Sunday Demo

Stephen Kekule will discuss his process for painting with acrylics. He plans to share a slide show of how his featured paintings started as an image or idea and were transformed into the finished artwork. "Sneak Preview" - Washington County Artists Open Studio Tour

 

 

I spent most of today receiving and installing artwork from more than half of the 49 artists participating in a tour of Washington County Artists Open Studios, which will take place on October 19 and 20th. As a preview for the event, the artists are offering a sampling of what they will have in abundance when the public is invited into their private work spaces next month.

The work showcases a very eclectic mix of materials - fiber, glass, paper, encaustic, ceramics, felted wool, painted silk, acrylic, watercolor, metal, collage, photography, oil, and more. There are as many styles as there are materials so viewers are sure to find something that catches their fancy.

 

The exhibit is open through Saturday, September 28; a free reception will be held on Saturday, September 7, from 6 to 9 p.m. Come and have a glass of wine and enjoy some lively discussion about art with the people who make it. Hope to see you on Saturday.

"Passion of Simplicity" is Featured in September

We have a great pairing of artists for our September featured show. Roberta Babcock and Sue Jensen bring their passion for simplicity and their experience with their media to these two new contemporary collections.

Roberta Babcock will share her new series of elongated fiber clay figures with a focus on the figures' emotional connection. She conveys feelings and attitude without a lot of detail, but rather through her choice of color, shape, and movement. Roberta worked for over a year on this collection and will introduce it to the world at Art On Broadway! She considers this work a study in minimalism.

 



Sue's pieces represent a challenge to work with a different palette. Instead of her usual focus on red and warm tones, she challenged herself to work with hues on the cooler side of the color wheel. At the same time, however, she trusted the form-making that she knows and loves, and continued to paint her favorite subject - nature at its simplest.

 



Visit with Sue and Roberta at a reception in their honor on Saturday, September 7, from 6 to 9 p.m. Enjoy wine, appetizers, and an evening of wonderful artwork. Their show continues through September 28.

Roberta Babcock -
Roberta will demonstrate how she creates her elongated fiber clay figures on Sunday, September 1, at Art In The Pearl from 10 to 2 p.m. Look for her in the Pacific Northwest Sculptors tent. She will have a sign-up sheet for new classes she is offering. Roberta does an outstanding demo!

 

 

 

Linda Baker -

Linda is President of Painters Showcase, and is pleased to announce their event will take place this year at The Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club on September 27 and 28, 10 am to 8 pm. There is an Artists Reception nightly from 5-8 with appetizers, music, and drawings to win one of eight original artworks. This is always a wonderful event. Congratulations Linda!

 

 

 

Gretha Lindwood -

Gretha is one of 39 artists selected to participate at the Pacific Northwest Plein Air Competition and Exhibition in Hood River. The juror for this event is national recognized artist Becky Joy. Results from the 3 day paint-out will be exhibited at Columbia Arts in Hood River from September 6 thru September 29. Good luck Gretha!

 

 

 

Kris Paul -

Look for Kris at the Portland Japanese Garden on Sunday, September 8, as she demonstrates her process of working in clay. Later in the month, Kris travels to Japan where her ceramic sculpture "Obsidian" will be on display at the Odori Museum and the Asahikawa Design Gallery in Sapporo. Congratulations on this wonderful accomplishment!

 

 

 

 

Susan Schenk -

Susan has a very busy month of art activities. She will have flower collages on display at the Holistic Health Center on Allen in Beaverton from September 3 through October 1; "unconventional" collages in a show called "Oddities" at Lane Gallery, 25th and SE Clinton in Portland opening on September 6; and a collage display at Willamette Falls Hospital through October 8 courtesy of Clackamas County Arts Alliance. On September 21 from 2-5, Susan will teach "Collage A Butterfly" at Collage PDX on NE Alberta, and will conduct several classes at Art and Soul retreat in Portland on October 3 and 4.

  

 

Diana Unterspan -

Diana's fiber art piece, "Pupu Lips" is currently installed at Las Lagunas Gallery in Laguna Beach CA, and she will attend the Millinery Artists Guild Hat Camp on Vashon Island, Washington, the last weekend in September to refine her hat-making skills. Always growing, always learning!

 

 







"Artist A Day" Event Coming Up

The month of September will offer visitors an opportunity to see 21 free demonstrations by 17 of our artists. Starting on Tuesday, September 3, with an oil painting demo by Linda Baker, there will be a different member artist working in his/her medium of choice each Tuesday thru Saturday from noon to 3 p.m.

This is a chance for the public to see local artists at work - to learn about the materials they use, the inspirations for their designs, the processes they follow, and the decisions they make as each piece of art develops before the viewer's eyes.

Out & About With Our Artists This Month

Kris Paul is busy this month with activities at the Portland Japanese Gardens. The gardens have their annual "Behind the Shoji" event from August 1 to September 8. In addition to having her naked raku work on exhibit, Kris will demonstrate her creative process on Sunday, August 11 from 11 to 2.

From August 24 to September 2, Kris will participate in the Potters Vineyard Art Show & Sale, 14725 NE Quarry Road in Newberg. Hours are 11 to 5 daily.

AOB's Special Promotions @ First Friday in August

At First Friday on August 2, Roberta Babcock will demonstrate her process for working in clay at the gallery. The demo will take place from 5:30 to 8:30 and will be one of several special promotions offered by Art On Broadway for this monthly Downtown Beaverton event. Come back to the gallery often during the evening to see how her project progresses.

 

If you're looking for an opportunity to purchase artwork at great prices, you will want to participate in our First Friday Silent Auction when gallery artists offer a selection of art at low starting prices and hope to have multiple bids on the works. The auction starts at 5 and closes promptly at 8:30 when the highest bidder on each piece walks away with original art. Auction items include paintings, jewelry, glass, ceramic sculptures, and photography. The gallery stays open until 9 p.m. unlike most of the businesses which close at 8 pm on First Fridays. Shopping for artwork at the auction is fun and a good way to support local artists from the Beaverton area. Buy something for yourself or bid on an item for a gift for a special friend or family member. Here's a sneak peak at one of the pieces that will be submitted for bidding in August.

"August Annual - An Exhibit of New Works by Our 20 Artists"

They say "variety is the spice of life." With that said, the new featured show for August at Art On Broadway will be exciting and sure to energize and stimulate visitors to the gallery. Each of our 20 award-winning artists will have work featured in the "August Annual" group show. New work by our three jewelry artists, six 3-D artists, one photographer, and ten painters will be creatively installed to make the show flow as a cohesive unit and still maximum the individual style and technical abilities of all 20 artists.

As the gallery approaches its third year in operation, it seems fitting to honor the commitment and sense of community that our artists have given to establishing and maintaining a fine art gallery in Beaverton's Historic Downtown. We still have visitors "discover" us for the first time with surprise and delight, and marvel at the continuous high caliber of the artwork on display. We are honored to represent artists with the following experience and professional accolades:  the current  President of Local 14, the ongoing President of Painters Showcase, the Chair of Ceramic Showcase, a 2013 Encaustic Instructor at Sitka Art Community, a multiple award-winner at Carmel Art Festival, a former Ceramic Instructor at Rock Creek College, a Public Art Project Manager for the City of Oakland, Ca,, the Owner/Director of Keller Art Gallery in Salem, Or., a former President of Portland Open Studios, and a participant in the American Craft Fair in NYC - just to mention a few highlights.

August Guest Show - "Kumi Pickford & Associates"

The Guest Show for August is "Kumi Pickford & Associates" and features the pastel portraits of Kumi Pickford and her students: Marlene Adams, Linda Evans-Rigney, Marcia McCreight, Carol McGill, Dolores South, and Terry Woloschuk. (Evans-Rigney and McCreight both accept commission work.) Kumi teaches pastel portrait painting at Elsie Stuhr Center, PCC, Beaverton Lodge, and Hillsboro Park & Recreation District.

 

Pickford has a strong foundation in the classical arts having first studied illustration at Nichibi Art Institute in Japan and then received her BFA in Combined Art from Universidad de las Americas in Pueble, Mexico. Early in her career, she was under contract as a portrait painter for both the US Navy and US Air Force in San Francisco, where she painted portraits of uniformed military personnel. While working in the art materials industry in the Bay Area, Kumi discovered soft pastel and  switched from oil to pastel as a teaching medium.

 

Pastels were widely used for portrait painting in the 18th century, and became a popular medium for other subject matter in the 19 century when the impressionists entered the art scene. Manet, Renoir, Toulouse-Latrec, Whistler, Degas, and Mary Cassatt all worked with soft pastel.

 

The Pickford group exhibit will open on August 7 and run through August 31. The gallery will host an Artists Reception on Saturday, August 10 from 6 to 9. We hope you will attend and meet these talented ladies and view their work.
