Spring Boutique Launches Strong

We started off with strong sales at our guest boutique this weekend; however there's still a lot to choose from. If you're looking for gifts, you'll want to stop by to see the lovely things we have for sale.

Two Events - One Day

Reminder:  Saturday, April 8, will be a busy day in the gallery.

We invite you to join us for an afternoon reception for our Guest Spring Boutique from 1 to 4 p.m. Enjoy light refreshments as you shop for artisan gifts designed and made by ten local artists.

Return at 5 o'clock for an intimate art talk by our current featured artist, Michael Kelly. Michael will talk about the materials he uses and the thought process behind his multi-media pieces.

At both events, you'll have an opportunity to sign up for April's remaining Tuesdays @ Two Demos - Drawing, Watercolor, and Felting. The demos are free, fun, and informative - but seating is limited. Check with the staffing artist to reserve a space.

Recap of Tuesdays @ Two Demo by Dianne Erickson

Dianne gets a gold star for her encaustic monotype demonstration on Tuesday. First she shared a variety of monotypes she had previously created including a scroll and a figurative image she calls "Bill" - it reminds her of Bill Gates. She shared some of her materials and techniques, then gave each attendee an opportunity to create their own nonobjective monotype. After a short break, Dianne showed how she often uses walnut oil and India ink to go back into the piece and experiment even more. Once again, she offered a hands-on experience for everyone to see for themselves how the original wax application reacts with the oil and ink. A fun and informational afternoon thanks to Dianne! 

A recent addition to AOB, Dianne has five framed encaustic monotypes currently on exhibit.

Planning Is Underway for Washington County Open Studios

Although it doesn't take place until October, registration for Washington County Open Studios Tour is now underway. Typically about 50 artists from throughout the county register for the event which takes place the third weekend in October. They open their art studios to the public and share their creative process with everyone who visits. The tour is free and the Tour Guide is free. It's a wonderful way to spend a fall weekend. Mark your calendar now and save the dates. More news about the tour and where to get a copy of the Tour Guide will be posted as that information becomes available.

Carli Schultz Will Show @ Gathering of the Guilds

Member artist, Carli Schultz, will once again participate in the wonderful Gathering of the Guilds show, which happens every year at the Oregon Convention Center. She has participated in the show since 2007 as part of the Oregon Glass Guild but this year decided to participate as a member of CMAG, the Creative Metal Arts Guild.  

Carli looks forward to sharing her new work with you so stop by her booth and say hi! And don't forget you can always find a selection of Carli's jewelry at Art On Broadway Gallery.

Gallery Member Michael Kelly Makes The News

Michael Kelly just received news that his self portrait was accepted into the Intentional 2017 Spring Exhibit at the Emerald Art Gallery, 500 Main St., Springfield, Oregon. This is a national juried competition and it is an honor for an artist to be included. The exhibit runs from May 2 thru June 3.

April's Annual Spring Boutique

Each spring we invite up to 15 guest artists to bring us an inventory of their work to expand on our selection of gift items in the gallery. This April's boutique will offer jewelry, scarves, photography, greeting cards, functional and decorative ceramics, paper collage and paint-on-glass paintings, and more. It's a perfect time to purchase graduation, bridal shower, wedding, anniversary, teacher, birthday, and - of course - Mother's Day gifts in our friendly, relaxing gallery. 

Tim Havens, Sine Morse, Barb Sedgwick, Peg Silloway, Carolyn Woody, and Russell Young are back this year with more of their artwork; and Ann Altman, Reiko Archer, Susan Gallacher-Turner, Heather John, Olga Ivkin and Deb Steele will join them as first time boutique artists. All are local and offer gifts created by the hand and imagination of each artist!

The boutique will open on Wednesday, April 5, and continue through April 29. We will host an afternoon reception from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 8. Light refreshments will be offered.

Congrats to Carli, Gretha, and Sam

All three of our artists who applied for Portland Open Studios this year have received notice that their work has been accepted. Congratulations to Carli Schultz, Gretha Lindwood, and Sam Hingston. This event typically limits participation to 100 artists from throughout the greater Portland area so standards of acceptance are quite high.

Not only was Sam's work accepted but he received notification that his work was awarded one of two PDXOS Merit Awards. This honor "highlights an artist who both receives a high jury score and is identified by the Board as contributing to the diversity and quality of the tour." Kudos to Sam!

Our Artists - Out & About

Linda Baker, Mary Burgess and Gretha Lindwood, three of the gallery's 2D artists, will exhibit work in the upcoming Lake Area Artists Exhibit, April 21-23, at the Lakewood Center for the Arts in Lake Oswego. Work by these three accomplished artists is always available at Art On Broadway Gallery in Beaverton. The paintings shown below are currently on display and for sale at the gallery through the end of April.

Free Demos Every Tuesday in April

I'm happy to announce that we will offer demos every Tuesday afternoon in April starting at 2 p.m. There is no charge to attend. However since seating is limited, we suggest you reserve a spot by contacting the gallery. April 4 - Encaustic Monotype with new member Dianne Jean Erickson

Dianne joined Art On Broadway in March 2017 and immediately became involved by creating our quarterly postcard design for April, May and June. She also answered my request for artists to offer a Tuesday afternoon demo. A big thank you to Dianne for her willingness to share this exciting process with everyone.

April 11 - Drawing With Pencil & Charcoal, Guest Artist George Schweser

George has been a regular participant in our guest shows since we first started offering them. He holds a BFA in Painting from Kansas City Art Institute; we are grateful to him for his offer to conduct a demo here at the gallery.

George plans to demonstrate drawing with pencil during the first hour and follow with a hour of drawing demo using charcoal and pastel. 




April 18 - Watercolor, Guest Artist Olga Ivkin

Olga, like George, is a regular participant in our Call to Artists open shows. She is also a guest artist this year in our Spring Boutique. Formally trained in fine arts at one of Russia's most prestigious art universities, Strooganov Moscow State University of Arts and Industry, Olga has graciosly offered to share her training and talent as she demonstrates her watercolor process for us.

April 25 - Felting with new member Patricia Rehm

Patricia also joined us in March 2017 after participating in our 2016 Holiday Boutique. We are very happy to have her as a member and to share her wonderful fiber artwork with the public. Her scarves, purses, bags, and hats have already proven to be popular with our guests.

Patricia has been working with fiber arts since 1975, recently creating and embellishing felt pieces, both functional and whimsical. She uses specially dyed fibers, an ancient felting technique, and hand sculpting, to create one-of-a-kind lightweight, durable, and exquisite pieces of art.

Congratulations to Jim Scheller!

We are so proud to announce that one of our gallery artists will have work in a special exhibit of glass at the Mariettta/Cobb Museum of Art in Marietta, Georgia, April 8 - June 18. Below are five of Jim Scheller's pieces which were juried into "For The Love Of Glass." He will be flying to Atlanta to attend the Opening Reception on April 8. 

To see more of Jim's work, you just have to visit Art On Broadway Gallery in downtown Beaverton - no airports, no ticket prices, no crowded planes. Just stop by any Tuesday thru Saturday, 11 to 5 p.m.

Lucky For Us, Their Choice Is Glass

This post is for all the glass lovers out there. We are so fortunate to have four artists in the gallery who chose glass as their medium of choice. Visit us and see the diversity of color, style, and shape of the glass works created by these talented individuals. 

Rae Campbell creates both functional and decorative glass artwork. She says, "I have been working with glass since 1999 and there is something magical that happens when you introduce cold glass to a hot flame or kiln, it goes from something shapeless into a wonderful work of art."

Vicki Green also creates both functional and decorative pieces,as well as whimsical yard art. She describes her art journey this way, "My glass artwork continually evolves and often expresses my interpretation of elements of nature, life experiences, and textiles. I find myself exploring gradient lines, shadows and depth which are attained through multiple processes and constant experimentation."

Jim Scheller discovered glass in 2012 and says his inspiration "comes from the forms, textures and colors of natural and man-made objects, and objects imagined." His works "invite one to gaze inside and view the flows created by heat and gravity on the once molten glass; to get lost in the dance of light and color."

Jewelry designer Carli Schultz shares,"Glass can be made by nature or made by humans, and is one of the most enduring materials a human can create with. Sharing the joy of a glass creation and seeing someone else light up when they look into my small worlds is one of the best gifts of my art. Something about glass is inviting to everyone, at almost every age."
