Umbrella Update

A number of area artists turned in their one-of-a-kind painted umbrellas today for a fundraiser to benefit the Beaverton Downtown Association, a 501.c3 nonprofit.  A few of the finished designs are shown below. The fundraiser is part of the Cultural Art & Tasting Walk sponsored by the BDA and the Beaverton Arts Commission scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 14, from 2 to 6 p.m. Each umbrella is signed by it's designer and is meant to be used as a piece of decorative art. Some umbrellas will be on display at Beaverton Kia showroom and Art On Broadway Gallery (and possibly some of the art walk host businesses) as the date of the event nears. Tualatin Valley Creates

Congratulations to Cindy Dauer and her team at Westside Cultural Arts for unveiling their new logo and launching their new mission for the arts in Washington County. The group held a special event last night at Jenkins Estate in Hillsboro to kick off their new look and identity -  Tualatin Valley Creates.

Pam Nichol's Final Exhibit At Art On Broadway Gallery

"Living: Lessons of Life," continues through Saturday, October 28, at Art On Broadway Gallery. The exhibit consists of thirteen powerful encaustic paintings by Pam Nichols, former member of the gallery and now resident of Perth, Australia.

For Pam's many followers, this is your last chance to purchase Pam's work here in Oregon, at least for now; however, she has left us with some wonderful pieces to consider.

The story behind this exhibit started with Pam's intrigue of life lessons and how people come to learn them. She asked a number of people to share a lesson they have learned in life and a brief story behind it. "I explore and honor the emotions in each story by translating them into color, shape, and form in my encaustic paintings," shares Pam.

For Lesson #12, "Moving to the Surface," a friend shared, "Sometimes in life we are put in a situation we would never expect. We rise to what needs to be done in these times. We take care of others and provide the support that they need."

Pam's painting of Lesson #12 depicts three rows of horizontal blue brick-like shapes and one vertical "brick" with small metal rods carefully attached by copper wires. The rods create a ladder-like effect leading the viewer out of the blue depth and into a wall of broken brownish pieces with a large field of light and open space on the other side. It's almost as if the "situation" has been faced and broken into more manageable pieces; a brightness awaits with the discovery of openings that offer escape into the vastness of help and support beyond. 

Is this how Pam meant for this painting to be read? Maybe, maybe not. It's what I saw however when I looked at it closely. When you visit the gallery this month, study the painting and see what it means to you.

October Cultural Art & Tasting Walk Event

Art On Broadway Gallery is a host business along with eleven other old town businesses and Beaverton High School for a cultural art walk event sponsored by the Beaverton Downtown Association and the Beaverton Arts Commission during the month of October. The event features two components - a month long exhibit in our gallery, & an art walk on October 14.

The gallery exhibit will feature a piece of cultural-themed art by a number of area artists from October 3 through October 28, and will host an artists reception for this exhibit on Saturday, October 14, from 5 to 8 p.m. Ruby Vineyards will be on hand to offer wine tasting at the gallery. The artists represented in the exhibit are: Rebecca Benoit (photography),  Michele Bufton (acrylic), Lorraine Bushek (oil), Scott Cutler (mixed media), Mehrdokht  Darabi (painted wood), Kathryn Delaney (digital painting), Lynn Deal (fiber), Karen Doyle (oil), Susan Greenbaum (encaustic), Kirk Jones (photography), Phyllis Meyer (mixed media collage), Dee Rommel (acrylic), Barb Sedgwick (metal sculpture), Sharon Segal (acrylic), Suzanne Tyler (fused glass), and Anne Price Yates (acrylic)

The art walk from 2-6 pm on October 14 will be the first of its kind, and will partner each of the artists participating in the gallery's show with one of the following old town businesses: Art On Broadway Gallery, Beaverton Bakery, Beaverton Kia, Beaverton Sub Station, Big O's Pizza, Bootleggers Whiskey Bar, Clockwork Rose Tea House, Cozy Ground Coffee, Ichabod's Tavern, Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage, Rose City Modern, and The Rise at Old Town. Each location will also offer a complimentary "tasty" treat during the walk. Beaverton High School is another site on the map and will feature artwork by their student artists. The artists will set up their own temporary "gallery" within each business and offer their work for viewing and for sale. 

To begin the walk, visitors should pick up an event Passport (which includes a map) at any one of the twelve locations plus the high school, ask each location you visit to stamp your Passport, visit all thirteen locations and get thirteen stamps, then turn your Passport in at the final location. A completed Passport qualifies you for a drawing of prizes worth over $800. Prizes have been donated by Arthur Murray Dance Studio, Peddlers Pack, and The Vault vintage clothing store, as well as the twelve host businesses mentioned above. The drawing will be held at Art On Broadway Gallery at 6:30 pm that evening.

Beaverton Artists Show in Portland's First Unitarian Church

Seven member artists from Art On Broadway will have work featured during the month of October at the First Unitarian Church, 1211 SW Main, in downtown Portland. We thank the members of the church for this opportunity to share our work with your congregation and others.

Lost & Found

We had five pieces of jewelry parts turned into the gallery after Saturday's reception. They were found on the ground directly in front of our space. If anyone had a necklace break that evening, please check with us to see if these pieces belong to you.

Call To Artists - Deadline Extended

Area Artists (2D, 3D, Jewelry):  I wanted to be sure you all are aware of an opportunity to show and sell your work at an upcoming event in Beaverton. The city and the Beaverton Downtown Association (501c3 nonprofit) are sponsoring a "Cultural Art & Tasting Walk" on October 14. They have plans to partner artists, wineries, and businesses located in the historic downtown for this event. They asked Art On Broadway to participate and help contact and register artists; our members will also make up the jury panel along with staff from the arts commission and we will display the top fifteen entries in our gallery for the month of October. The great thing about this event is that there is no fee to enter; however, registration is just around the corner.

Interested artists should go to www.artonbroadway.net  and click on our "Call To Artists" page. Details for entering and the application are posted there. The deadline for entering has been extended to September 11 at 11 a.m. Please read the terms carefully. 

Quick Overview:  The jury panel will make its selections from actual artwork on September 11. All artwork will be delivered to Art On Broadway Gallery, 12570 SW Broadway Street, Beaverton in the morning and picked up the same day in the afternoon after the jury has met. The 15 artists whose work is selected for display in the gallery will need to provide a quality photo image for publicity and return the artwork for installation on Monday, October 2. The top 15, along with all artists whose work is juried into the event will be partnered with a participating business for the art walk on October 14. Members of the BDA will coordinate artist/business partnerships. Any sales that occur that day outside of the gallery will be commission free. However, 30% commission will be charged on sales of work selected for display in the gallery for the month of October. 

Note:  No fee to enter and no commission on sales you make on October 14. Carefully read the "Terms" listed on our Call to Artists registration form and follow the directions.

September Show Is Waiting To Impress You

Another outstanding show at the gallery for the months of September and October. We are featuring our final exhibit of artwork by Pam Nichols who moved to Perth, Australia in early August but who will remain in our hearts forever. This show is a tribute to Pam and the energy and passion she gave to all of us over her years as a member of Art On Broadway. "Living: Lessons of Life" includes twelve encaustic paintings with a story.

In addition, we are introducing three new members to the gallery - each with their own personal style and medium. Nancy Cuevas returns with a collection of mini oil paintings of cats; Elizabeth Bamberger introduces her fine art quilts; and Jan von Bergen shares a collection of her ceramic work. We are so fortunate to have these talented women join our group.

Our guest show this month is a solo show of oil paintings by Blaine Johnson inspired by a recent trip to Scotland. Rumor has it that Blaine - who loves everything Scottish - will wear his Scottish kilt to the reception on Saturday, September 9 from 5 to 8 p.m.

The Days Are Numbered

The current show at the gallery is coming to a close on Saturday, August 26. If you haven't seen this exhibit, you need to hurry in. If you saw the show and something wonderful caught your eye, now is the time to return and make that piece your own!

It doesn't get much better than Gretha Lindwood's collection of plein air pastel paintings. Gretha has honed her talent to the highest degree and shares fifteen of her latest pieces with this exhibit - "Evocative Blues." Our guest wall show, "At The End Of The Day," also closes on Saturday. Twenty pieces by area artists depict how each of the fifteen participants interpreted this theme.

Gallery hours are Tuesday thru Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The gallery is in partnership with the Beaverton Downtown Association on a Cultural Art & Tasting Event in October. Watch for more information about this event in the upcoming weeks. The painted/decorated umbrellas will be sold during the event as a fundraiser for the BDA.  

 

We have 48 umbrellas to complete by the end of September - I'm still working on my first. I can tell you a couple of things about this project - I can't do this by myself, and it's really fun to experiment with various materials on an unusual support and format. So I'm challenging all you accomplished artists out there to stop by the gallery and pick up an umbrella; take it home, create something beautiful and sign it; then return the finished product before the end of the month. Your donated time, talent and materials will be greatly appreciated!

 

 

 

Painters Showcase This Weekend

Gallery artist Linda Baker and her friends at Painters Showcase will feature their paintings this weekend at their annual show. This year the event has a new location - The Grand Hotel at Bridgeport in Tigard. The show opened today and continues through Sunday; hours are 11 to 8 Friday and Saturday and 11 to 6 on Sunday.

Linda has been with us since we opened seven years ago. Her oil paintings can always be found at Art On Broadway in Beaverton.

More Fiber In Your Diet Is Good For You

Isn't that what the nutritionists and doctors keep telling us?

Well, we are happy to announce that you can soon get an extra dose of fiber at Art On Broadway Gallery. This type of fiber, however, is meant to be digested with your eyes. Starting in September, Elizabeth Bamberger will join fiber artist Patricia Rehm who designs and creates hand-dyed felted wool/silk wearable art currently for sale at the gallery .

Elizabeth is originally from England and spent time in Latin America before settling in Portland seventeen years ago. Since retiring, she has found her passion in the exploration of fiber arts, especially fine art quilts. She loves to create her own designs and to push the limits by rusting, painting, and dyeing fabric. Elizabeth says her landscape and cityscape designs have become increasingly more abstract over time.
