Best Window Display

Art On Broadway won the prize (a gift basket with donated items from downtown businesses) for having the best holiday window display for "The Taste Of Vintage Holidays" event. Visitors from the community voted on their favorite Christmas windows following the tree lighting ceremony last Saturday night, and we received the most votes! Fellow gallery artists Carli Kruse and Diana Unterspan joined me for a photo with the basket of goodies.

Diana and I are wearing two of the hats that Diana creates from raw wool. Her work will be featured in February along with contemporary jewelry by Bert Cohen.

Gretha Lindwood, whose featured show at AOB continues through October 27, has two paintings juried into the Northwest Pastel Society's Members Show on display now through October 29 at the Columbia Center for the Arts, 215 Cascade Street, Hood River, Oregon. "Countryside Walk" and "The Breckenridge Place" are both pastel paintings. The latter was painted en plein air during Telluride Plein Air 2012.

Also, congratulations to Gretha for having her pastel painting, "The Harmony of Winter," juried into Beaverton's 30th Annual Visual Arts Showcase. Kudos to Diana Unterspan as well. Diana is a recent addition to AOB and had her "Pointillist Portrait" accepted by Gallery 114. The 8x8 piece of art was created using encaustic (beeswax). Diana exhibits her handmade wool and straw hats at AOB.

Linda J. Baker was honored with an array of awards at the recent Painters Showcase exhibit at Jenkins Estate. Her oil painting, "Storm Lifting," took 3rd Place; and she tied for Artists Award ("Caroline In Silver") and People's Choice ("Silver With Nectarines"). What an achievement! Congratulations, Linda.

Coming In November: The Pauls

During the month of November, the featured walls and pedestals at Art On Broadway will be graced with the work of Kris and Willy Paul. The husband and wife team from Lake Oswego have collaborated on "Nature's Impressions: Abstract/Ikebana." Their show will open on November 1 and close on December 1, with an Artists Reception on Saturday, November 3.

Kris is a ceramic artist whose featured work is for use in Ikebana floral design. Expressing the raw clay, she creates forms that are simple in design but add a complexity intricate in the completion of Ikebana arrangements. The piece depicted is "Crimson Thread," made of Black Mountain Stoneware with Copper Red Glaze. Maple boughs and Iris complete the design.

Willy, an architect by profession, will feature abstract flora photography taken to the extreme. His images are manipulated in the camera and then printed on metal, resulting in an extreme view of the natural landscape. Abstract L157 is shown below.

Come and enjoy lively conversation with these talented artists at the reception in their honor on November 3 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Good News and Bad News

First the bad news...

Starting October 1, we have to say "goodbye" to two of our member artists who are moving on to other art adventures. We are sad to see Clarise Kinney (pet portraits) and Bruce Ulrich (abstract acrylics) leave our group; we wish them well and have been assured they will return for future visits.

Bruce is participating in the Washington County Open Studios tour on October 20-21. Pick up a free brochure and map at the gallery.

Now the good news... We welcome three new artists to our group starting in October.

A big "hello" to Mila Raphael, watercolor artist from Mt. Tabor; Susan Schenk, collage artist from Wilsonville; and Diana Unterspan, fiber artist from Portland. Each artist will bring something new and different to our exhibits, and will have work on display beginning next week. Visit our special events on First Friday, 5-9, and/or Saturday, October 6, 6-9 p.m. for our artists' reception. Enjoy the new artwork and help us welcome these talented ladies to our gallery.

What's Happening Outside the Gallery...

RAE CAMPBELL holds regular glass classes at "Gifts and Decor." Check out times and details by visiting http://www.giftdecorportland.com. A wide selection of Rae's fused and high fired glass is always available at Art On Broadway.

ELAINE TAN was in the Silverton Fine Arts Festival in August. It is one of her favorite outdoor shows because she loves the town of Silverton and the lovely treed venue. She had a very successful show selling her beautiful necklaces and earrings. It was great for her to see many repeat customers and meet new ones. Visit Art On Broadway often to see the latest designs by Elaine and to check out her featured exhibit through September 29.

STEPHEN KEKULE is participating in September in "Rooms with a View" exhibit at the Cannon Beach Gallery. Steve's acrylic painting, "Rose Bush," is shown below. Other images by Steve can be viewed during gallery hours at AOB.

SUE JENSEN is part of another show this month, entitled "Birds 2012," held at the Valley Arts Gallery in downtown Forest Grove. The opening reception took place on Saturday, Sept. 8, from 2-4 pm. The show runs for 2 months. And, of course, don't forget to stop by Art On Broadway to see the display of Sue's encaustic and acrylic paintings featured through September 29.

First Friday in September

The public is invited to join us once again on Friday, September 7, from 5 to 9 p.m. to celebrate First Friday in downtown Beaverton. We will conduct our usual First Friday auction from 5 to 8:30 p.m. with a wide range of original art opening at value prices. Most of our 18 artists will have some offering for the auction so look for great buys on jewelry, glass, ceramics, acrylic, pastel, watercolor, and photography.

Rae Campbell will demonstrate fused glass design throughout the evening. Rae is a great teacher and her enthusiasm for what she does will charm you.

Guest Artist, Lana Nelson, Presents "Autumn Reflections"

Art On Broadway is pleased to present eight new oil paintings by Guest Artist, Lana Nelson. Her exhibit opens on September 7 and continues through September 29, with a reception on Saturday, September 8, from 6 to 9 p.m. Complimentary wine and refreshments will be served.

Lana's work is a tribute to Autumn, with the intense colors and beauty that the season shares with all of us. Her final piece in the series depicts the Beaverton History Center celebrating the holidays with music, dance and good cheer.

Please join us in our own celebration of Lana's artwork.

"Cityscapes," by Annie Salness

"Cityscapes" opened today at Art On Broadway and will continue through Saturday, September 1. A reception to honor Annie Salness will take place on Saturday, August 11, from 6 to 9 p.m.

I don't think you'll find a better exhibit anywhere in the Portland area than this one put together by Annie. Three of the acrylic paintings are 36x48 and depict the ebb and flow of traffic in busy downtown settings. She simplifies complex scenes, applying detail only where it's important; uses a neutral palette but places intense color in all the right spots; and handles light and shadow better than anyone else I know. This is a show you will not want to miss! We feel so honored to represent Annie Salness!

"Look Both Ways," and "Two Way," Acrylic on Canvas by Annie Salness

"Yesterday, Today, & Tomorrow," Guest Show for August

Seventeen guest artists have their work on exhibit this month at Art On Broadway. Everything from clay, stoneware, photograph, watercolor, pastel, oil, linocut, wood cut, acrylic and silk painting is included. We hope you will attend our reception on Saturday, August 11, from 6 to 9 p.m. and enjoy the artwork of Margaret Carol Carter, Maud and Sven Durland, Michelle Gallagher, Eddie Greenly, CJ Hurley, Patti Isaacs, Susan G. Jensen, Marlene King, Wil LaBelle, Anna Lancaster, Mac McDonald, Barbara McQueen, Jane Means, George Schweser, Isabel Villar, and Mary Williams.
