"Experimental Journeys" - Paintings by Sandy Dutko

Sandy has been a member of Art On Broadway for a year; October will be her first featured show since joining us. However, Sandy's work will be familiar to many of you through her memberships and exhibits with Painters Showcase, Lake Area Artists, Buffalo Grass Society and Oregon Society of Artists.

Her experimental paintings begin with either an inspirational idea from nature or from an abstract start that she creates from making marks, stamping, monoprinting, marbling, spraying, or pouring paint onto the painting surface. Sandy's painting starts give her the initial idea of where to begin. Each step leads her to the next and the finished work is always a surprise. She likes to try something new in each painting and believes that taking risks leads to more interesting work. Because of this approach, her work is continually changing and evolving.

The gallery will host a public reception in honor of Sandy on Saturday, October 10, from 6 to 9 p.m. Complimentary wine and refreshments.  Her show opens on October 7 and continues through October 31. Come join us and enjoy the wide range of Sandy's many talents!

October Guest Exhibit - "HIVE"

Twelve members of the International Encaustic Artists, Portland Chapter, will offer a cooperative exhibit in October on the Guest Wall in the West Wing of the gallery. "HIVE" is a fascinating concept spearheaded by Pam Nichols and includes individual pieces by Bridget Benton, Robyn Bogardus, Betsy Bustamonte, Kathleen Curtis Cosgrove, Dianne Erickson, Chantel Greene, Sue Jensen, Manuela Kalestiantz, Pam Nichols, Virginia Parks, Ruth Ann Skodacek, and Kelly Williams.

These artists have combined their collective energy using the power of beeswax to build a body of work by sculpting, carving, inlaying, fusing, burnishing, drawing, and painting - the result is HIVE. Just as bees gather together in a place of great activity to create wax,  these twelve artists have come together to turn that gift of wax into an assemblage of hexagonal paintings that honor the Hive and link each piece to the others.

We are honored to share this thoughtful exhibit with you.

October 2015 - Our 5 Year Anniversary Will Be Here Soon;

Plans are underway for the 5-year anniversary of Art On Broadway Gallery in historic downtown Beaverton. We have made it through some very tough economic times and had to adapt to a number of unexpected changes - but we have survived and we want to celebrate the ups and the downs of our journey so far. The "ups" because those times make us happy (and help to keep us in business) and the "downs" because those times challenge us to be stronger, more inventive, and better problem-solvers than we were before.

We plan to pop some champagne and nibble on great hors d'oeuvres,  plus invite all the member artists who shared our space and vision over the years to exhibit a piece of their latest artwork at the reception.

Mark your calendars now for Sunday, October 4, from 1 to 4 p.m., and watch for future updates!

"Fragments" by Peggy Harkins - Featured September Exhibit

Look for a fabulous featured show in the main gallery when "Fragments" opens up on September 2. Peggy Harkins will exhibit her beautifully crafted wooden art objects, all sculpted, carved, and painted by hand.

Peggy's creative life began with fabric, and fabric still plays a major role in the inspiration for the color and design patterns that cover the surfaces of her creations.  Whether the finished piece of art is a purse, a box, a tray, a mirror, a "rug," fabric designs from all over the world have influenced Peggy's choices for the surface of the wood that she carves. Her designs and shapes are sensitive to the history and aesthetics of different cultures and their appeal is universal.

"Fragments" opens on September 2 and continues through October 3. Please help us celebrate the talent and dedication of this highly talented artist at a reception on Saturday, September 12, from 6 to 9 p.m.  Let Peggy tell you about her process and the journey that brought her to this high level of quality artwork.

First Friday - September 4, 2015

September 4 is the final First Friday of the 2015 season. We invite you to visit the historic downtown district of Beaverton and enjoy the live music at three locations, the variety of street vendors, the special promotions by store owners, the free Party Bus that offers hop on/hop off service, and the opportunity to dine at one of the many restaurants in our area. Broadway will be closed to through traffic starting at 4 p.m. but there are several public lots nearby with free parking. The farmers market lot off 3rd Street accommodates a lot of vehicles and the Party Bus stops at 3rd and Washington if you don't feel like an evening stroll.

Art On Broadway will once again offer our Silent Auction - a chance to buy original artwork at great savings. Jewelry items by Bert Cohen, paintings by Donna Sanson, and wooden sculptures by Peggy Harkins are just some of the works included. The gallery remains open until 9 p.m. The auction closes at 8:30 p.m. Come by and place a bid!

The Streetscape Project is nearing completion with trees in place and the brick plaza area already being used for seating and outdoor dining. Thai High 5, Gloria's Secret Cafe, and Chuck's Substation have set out cafe tables and chairs and businesses are lining the street with greenery and flowering plants. The transformation offers a pleasant space to sit, stroll, shop, dine - and on First Fridays enjoy the live musical performances.

In addition to the new businesses in the Holland Plaza Center - Tulen Center for martial arts and self defense, and Moontalla's gifts and accessories - two other businesses have opened this summer. Be sure to check out Ambrosia Boutique at Farmington and Angel; owner Brenda Currier would love to show you the gently used "wears" and "wares" her store has to offer. At the corner of 1st and Main discover the newest health and beauty salons in the downtown - Tamara Sullivan recently opened Dulcederm at 12825 SW 1st Street and shares the space with building mate, Breathe Bodywork. Stop by all these businesses on First Friday and make their owners feel welcome.

Three Artists Join Art On Broadway

We are proud to announce the addition of three artists to our group at AOB. Starting in September, Mary Burgess, Virginia Parks, and Wendy Robinson will share their creations along with the rest of the gang. Each brings their own style and medium to the gallery; you can see their work starting on September 2 when the new exhibit opens. In the meantime, let me briefly introduce them:

Mary Burgess works in watercolor, acrylic, and paper media. She lives in Lake Oswego and taught art at David Douglas High School for 15 years. She is a member of Lake Area Artists and the Watercolor Society of Oregon. Mary participated in the Spring Guest Boutique at the gallery where she offered hand painted Ukrainian eggs, artist's journals & handmade cards, plus wonderful watercolor paintings.

If you're a fan of watercolors, you could find yourself  spending a lot of time at the gallery enjoying Mary's work.

Virginia Parks lives in Tigard, is an archaeologist by day, and loves to paint with encaustics (beeswax, pigment, and Damar Resin). She was drawn to encaustics by its antiquity. Beeswax was originally used by shipbuilders to waterproof ships in ancient Greece. Today it has experienced a resurgence as an exciting art medium. Virginia says she embraces encaustic painting for both its unpredictability and its adaptability.

She is a member of the International Encaustic Artists of Oregon and exhibited at Art On Broadway in several of our Guest Shows.

Wendy Robinson "enjoys creating," and her creations are pieces of jewelry from fiber, fabric and beads. Like Virginia, Wendy has a full time job but has filled her "free time" this year as Volunteerism Chair for Portland Open Studios in addition to creating artwork.

Since I don't have a photo of Wendy at present, I'm introducing her through an image of one of her necklaces. Wendy says her pieces are crafted through a process of spontaneity and chance - an internal process of exploring possibilities based on choice of materials. "Every finished piece is a visual story of texture, color and form."

Wendy is the fourth jewelry designer to become a part of Art On Broadway gallery.

A warm welcome to Mary, Virginia, and Wendy

August First Friday - August 8

Our popular Silent Auction returns in August for First Friday only. The auction starts at 5 and ends at 8:30 p.m. Our artists have a selection of wonderful pieces of original artwork with the bidding starting at highly reduced prices. Their hope is that there will be lots of bidding on their work and it will end up selling for close to its value price. Original paintings, jewelry, and hand-dyed scarves are among the offerings. Bidding ends at 8:30 and the person with the highest bid wins the item. Many times the artwork sells at opening bid prices or close to open bid prices. It's fun and a way to purchase original artwork at a real savings.

Special promotions by other downtown businesses include $1 ice cream cones at the Sub Station, beer garden and barbecue at Broadway Saloon/Bootleggers, 20% discount storewide at The Vault Vintage Clothing Store, wine tasting at Rose City Modern, fresh floral bouquets at Beaverton Florists, drawing for lunch and a "Picking Experience" with the owner of Peonies & Possibilities, and 10% off any rental or purchase of merchandise from Costume Avenue during First Friday.

The Tulen Center will celebrate its Grand Opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 5 p.m. in front of their business in the Holland Shopping Center at the intersection of East and SW Broadway. They will offer martial arts demos on the hour and half hour throughout the evening

There will be four bands sponsored by the Beaverton Downtown Association - Rich Layton & The Troublemakers will perform Cajun music on Broadway at West Street; Power Pep will offer rock & roll at Angel & 1st; Suzanne Calloway & Two Spirit Jazz will perform at 2nd and Watson, and Zack Bryson will entertain with country music at Beaverton Bakery

Take the free "Party Bus" to get around to all the happenings at First Friday - hop on and hop off at any one of five stops. Plan to eat at one of Portland's favorite food trucks, Grilled Cheese Grill; then grab a snow cone at Beaverton Florists as a cool and refreshing finish to the evening.

Come on out and eat, drink, dance, shop - and check out the progress on the new construction taking place on Broadway. Lots to enjoy!

Out and About With AOB Artists

We are so fortunate to have such a strong group of artists at Art On Broadway. Several of our members have recently been recognized with special honors; we want to share their successes with you:

Linda Baker took a 3rd Place Award at this year's Oregon Society of Artists Rose Festival Art Exhibit. Linda is an original member of AOB and her still life oil paintings are always favorites of visitors to the gallery. Way to go, Linda!

Alex Boyden will have one of her pastel paintings, "Oregon Planes I," on exhibit in a Cornerstone house at the 2015 Northwest Natural Street of Dreams. The event runs August 1-30. Congratulations, Alex!

Sam Hingston has been juried into the prestigious Bellevue Museum Arts Fair in Bellevue, WA coming up July 24-26. His 70" tall Jellyfish Series #4 piece will surely capture everyone's attention. To take a sneak peak, visit Sam's website www.samhingston.com. We wish Sam all the recognition and success at this event that he deserves!

"Fresh Air," 15 Plein Air Paintings by Gretha Lindwood

We are proud to showcase fifteen new pastel paintings by Gretha Lindwood during the month of July. "Fresh Air" is a solo exhibit which will continue through the  1st of August. An artist's reception to honor Gretha and her latest paintings will be held on Saturday, July 11, from 6 to 9 p.m.

"Sunlight & Shadow," shown below, is a painting of sun dappled light on a path to Wapato Lake on Sauvie Island - trees, shrubs, and grasses all casting shadows across the trail. The painting is 12x12 and is for sale.

We hope you will join us for a glass of wine and some light refreshments; plus enjoy an opportunity to visit with Gretha and many of the other artists who will be present at the reception.

Guest Show for July

Art On Broadway was honored to be a recipient of a $500 grant from the Beaverton Arts Commission this year; the money will be used to help fund two separate exhibits on our guest wall. The first of these is a display of colorful drawings from 3rd graders enrolled in a special art program offered by the Art Smart Foundation, a local non-profit organization. The Art Smart display opened on July 1 and will continue through August 1, with a reception on Saturday, July 11, to honor the 24 young artists whose work is on display.

A special thank you to Blick Art Supply on Cedar Hills Boulevard for its generous donation of $250 worth of gift cards to the Art Smart program. The donation will be used to purchase new art materials for the students use.

Come visit the gallery to see these colorful drawings and to learn more about this program and how you can become involved.

Guest Show for June - Paul Kingsbury

 Sea Fever by John Masefield

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking.

I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull's way and the whale's way, where the wind's like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.

A love of the sea - that's what John Masefield and Paul Kingsbury share. Masefield expressed his feelings through poetry, while Paul Kingsbury uses canvas, paint and brushes to convey his affection for "the lonely sea and the sky."

Kingsbury acrylics are featured on the Guest Wall at Art On Broadway during the month of June in his solo show, "The Wonders of the Sea.". The show opens on June 3 and continues through Saturday, June 27. A reception to celebrate these glorious paintings and to honor the man who painted them will be held on Saturday, June 13, from 6 to 9 p.m.

This is a wonderful collection of seascapes from an artist who has spent over 40 years depicting a subject he knows and loves. Be sure to visit the gallery this month - you'll swear you can smell the salt air.

Featured in June - Pam Nichols and "Rust & Wax"

The fascination with encaustic paintings continues, and Pam Nichols is one of the reasons it is so popular in our area. Pam is inventive, fearless, and always challenging herself. She is generous with her time, energy, and knowledge; and is an inspiration to all of us at AOB and a magnet for anyone anywhere interested in the arts.

"Rust & Wax"  reveals more of her work using rusted metal and pigmented beeswax, and opens Wednesday, June 3. The show runs through June 27, with a reception in her honor on Saturday, June 13, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Although Pam's work can be found in other galleries and annual shows, "Rust & Wax" is her major show for 2015. We feel very honored to have Pam as a member of Art On Broadway and to be unveiling her latest body of encaustic paintings.

Lake Area Artists 2015 Show:
A number of our artists are also members  of Lake Area Artists, a group of 40 artists that exhibits annually at the Lake Oswego Art Center - Linda Baker, Alex Boyden, Sandy Dutko and Gretha Lindwood,

Congratulations to Gretha Lindwood whose painting "Quiet Anticiption" was awarded the First Place blue ribbon at the 49th Annual Show. Her painting, "On The Path," received the Mayor's Choice award ribbon. Check out the "red dots" in the photo of Gretha and her display.

In addition, Gretha has work in a pastel show at Valley Art Gallery, 2022 Main Street in Forest Grove, during June. Artist demo and reception on Saturday, June 6, from  2 to 6 pm.

AOB's "At the Movies" Group:

The group was small, but the conversation was lively as we met to share our thoughts on the movie, "Big Eyes." The highlight of the discussion was the unveiling of Margaret Keane's portrait of Linda Baker as a small child. At the time when the portrait was painted, Margaret lived next door to Linda's family in Redondo Beach, CA. and did portraits of Linda's entire family. Keane's paintings of waifs with big eyes later became highly profitable and the secret behind how they were marketed is the story behind the movie. Linda and her portrait are show below.

Check our website regularly for announcements of future discussions of art movies/books at AOB. We all agreed it was a good activity and worth repeating.
