Special Presentation for April - "Sundays At Art on Broadway"

As part of our free monthly art presentation series (always the 4th Sunday of every month), Sharon Orella, Administrator for this year's Washington County Open Studios Tour, will share information about how Washington County artists can register, prepare, and/or volunteer for the tour; and how members of the public can get the most enjoyment from taking the tour.

This is the 6th Annual WCOS Tour and will take place this year on October 17 and 18. Registration to participate in the tour is underway with a deadline of June 1 to complete all paperwork.

Sharon's talk and Q&A session is scheduled for Sunday, April 26, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the gallery. There is no charge to attend but guests need to preregister by emailing Donna Sanson, donnasansonartworks@comcast.net.

Member Show for April - "Stepping Into Spring"

Guest Show for April - Spring Boutique

With the popularity of our holiday boutique each December, we decided to offer our guests another opportunity to shop for boutique gift items hand made by artists. At this time of year, many guests are looking for unique artisan gifts for graduation, bridal showers and weddings, anniversaries, Easter, end-of-the-year teacher gifts, birthdays, and of course Mother's Day. To this end we have invited a number of local artists to exhibit their works during April for our fist ever Spring Boutique.

Welcome to Two New Members

Beginning on April 1, visitors to the gallery will be treated to work by two new members. We welcome Thom Caccamo of Portland and Wendy Givens of Oregon City.

Thom is a builder in clay. His vessels and wall works are all hand built slabs, columns, posts and lintels that take their inspiration from architecture. Piece by piece he constructs geometric forms that are functional and sculptural.  If they were at architectural scale they would be monuments but even at the personal size of vessels they remind us of buildings without looking like houses and skyscrapers. Glaze is used sparingly, if at all, to keep the viewer focused on the forms. Instead of glaze the variations of color come from the natural color of the clay and the environment in which it is fired. His all white bas- relief wall works take on political and social themes, especially climate change and environmental degradation.

With a background in graphic design, Wendy uses a limited color palette of three transparent acrylics plus black and white to create her images. She layers and adjusts her colors as she paints. Often she begins with an abstract under painting and turns her canvas frequently until she settles on a direction for each piece. Wendy finds that some of her most satisfying paintings come as a result of this discovery process

Farewell

Sadly, at the end of March we will say farewell to three of our AOB family. We will miss Nancy Cuevas and her realistic oil paintings and  charcoal drawings; Don Schwartz and his wide-sweeping sea/landscape photographs; and Susette Wilson and her vases, platters,  floats and bowls with swirls of colored glass. We wish them success and happiness, and thank them for the time they spent as members of  our gallery.

Featured Member Show - "Artisan Jewelry," by Bert Cohen

Hammered Silver Ovals with Swarovski Crystal Bracelet by Bert Cohen

Bert Cohen's latest jewelry creations are on display through March 28 at Art On Broadway. Fine sterling silver and Swarovski Crystals are at the heart of these new designs, along with copper and gem stones. Although Bert has been creating jewelry for about ten years, most of her latest collection uses a recently learned technique of fusing fine silver wire to make solid rings without the use of solder.

Whether you're looking for a new necklace, bracelet, or earrings, you can find a selection of all three in this month's featured show. Join us on Saturday, March 15, from 6 to 9 p.m. at our monthly reception to celebrate our featured artist and the new exhibit of members' artwork throughout the gallery.
