Meet Our Newest Gallery Artist - Sandy Dutko

Beginning October 1, Art On Broadway is pleased to announce the addition of Sandy Dutko to our family of member artists. Sandy is also a member of Painter's Showcase, the Watercolor Society of Oregon, and the Oregon Society of Artists. Stop by and become acquainted with Sandy through her artwork.

Sandy knew at an early age that art was her passion and she constantly drew and painted as a child. She felt a deep love of nature growing up in the Pacific Northwest where she spent summers camping at the Oregon coast and in the Cascade mountains with her family. As a young adult she set out to discover the National Parks of the USA, crossing the borders into Canada, Mexico, and Central America. Her artwork has been inspired by these travels and her continued appreciation for the diversity and beauty of nature remains.

Nancy Cuevas and "Black Corset" - Featured in October

Mysterious and seductive - bold and beautiful - all describe the subject matter of Nancy Cuevas' oil paintings featured this month at Art On Broadway. The show opens on October 1 and closes November 1, with an Artist's Reception on Saturday, October 11, from 6-9 p.m.

"Black Corset" is large - 48" x 48" - and impressive. The curvaceous lines of the female feature are accentuated by the strong contrast of light and dark. This woman definitely grabs the viewer's attention as the eye moves from head to toe and back again. She is indeed a mystery - a solitary figured posed on a warm patterned carpet but otherwise surrounded by a cool smoky blue room that absorbs her. "Black Corset" is one of seven paintings in this exhibit.

"Black Corset," Oil on Canvas

"When working out a composition," says Nancy, " I look for bold contrast between shadow and light, a distinct characteristic or essence from the sitter, and strong design elements. Setting out the paints, mixing color, and figuring out exactly what I am seeing is very meditative as the work takes on a life of its own. My subjects become very familiar to me as I deconstruct their physical forms and rebuild them again on 2d canvas. There is something joyful in recreating a moment in time. Unlike a photograph that freezes its image with the click of a shutter, my paintings capture a liveliness derived from my experience of the sitter through the time it takes me to paint it."

"I am inspired by the beauty of the human figure and nature. In my work I seek beauty, love and joy which in the end is what connects us all," shares Nancy.

September Reception

If you missed our reception on September 13, the following photos are meant to record the evening for everyone. Don and Wally's show was wonderful, it was a beautiful evening, Sue and Alex did a terrific job maintaining the reception table, Potter's Vineyard provided delicious wine, and there was a good turnout of guests. All that adds up to a successful evening.

"An Artist A Day" Demo Event - Tuesdays thru Fridays in August

Linda J. Baker in her home studio working with oil

This is the second year that Art On Broadway has offered free daily demos provided by members of our gallery. If you want to explore techniques in jewelry design, painting with soft pastel or encaustics, setting up and painting a still life in oils, etc., then this event is something you will not want to miss.

Each Tuesday through Friday in August, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the gallery, one artist will share his/her knowledge and skill creating a piece of artwork while you watch. It's a great educational opportunity if you're new to understanding how an artist thinks and works, and it's a source of stimulation and motivation for seasoned artists to try a new tool, a new medium, a new method, etc.

The schedule for the entire month is included in the Special Events section of our website. Check it out and drop by for 30 minutes, an hour, or for the entire afternoon.

Gretha Lindwood's pastel palette

New Oil Paintings by Linda Baker - "Viscosity At Work"

Linda Baker is a modern day oil painter whose paintings have the look and feel of something created in a much earlier time. Her subject matter, the richness of her palette, and her ability to fool us into thinking the copper pot, the china cup, and the ceramic vase are all much more than paint on a flat surface - these are the skills we have come to expect when we see a Linda Baker still life.

We are honored to have fourteen of her most recent paintings in our current featured show in the main gallery at Art On Broadway. The exhibit will continue through Saturday, August 30, and will include an artist's reception on Saturday, August 9, from 6 to 9 p.m. Please join us for a glass of wine and a chance to meet and talk with Linda about her art.

When visiting us to see this show, be sure to review the step-by-step photo outline of how Linda created "Koi Vase," the oil painting featured here. You will also want to mark your calendar for her free demo scheduled for Friday, August 15, from 1 to 4, as part of our month long "Artist A Day" demo event in August. See the calendar on the Special Events page of this website.

Potter's Vineyard - Our Wine Sponsor for July, August & September

We are so pleased to announce a partnership between Art On Broadway Gallery and Potter's Vineyard in Newberg, Oregon. Potter's Vineyard will sponsor wine at our monthly receptions on July 12, August 9, and September 13. Stop by the gallery during these evening celebrations to enjoy a glass of wine while you visit with our artists and spend some time viewing the newest artwork.

Not only are Bill and Sandy Sanchez the owners of the vineyard, they are also artists with a passion for Clay Art, thus the name Potter's Vineyard.  Bill and Sandy are honored to carry on the legacy of winemaker and grower, Laura Volkman, in her pursuit of producing premium Pinot Noir. They purchased Laura's 5-acre estate in the fall of 2012, and produce their wine in a modern facility but with true old world practices of gently handling, free-run or soft pressing, gravity transfer and lees aging in French Oak.

You can find their wines at the best local restaurants and wine shops and grocery stores in the Portland Metro Area; and they invite you to visit them during special tasting events at the Vineyard during the weekends before and during Memorial Day, Labor Day and Thanksgiving to experience the convergence of premium 'old world'  Pinot Noir and classic 'hand crafter' Clay Art.
